Quick Question: Telkom DSL

hey guys,

So I've been having an issue for the past 2-3 weeks (which telkom tech's are unable to resolve apparently). Roughly explained - I have major packet loss (sometimes constant, sometimes random). So here's the weird thing: Connected to 2 teamspeak servers, 1 shows 0% loss, other shows 50-80% loss. within an hour, it swaps roles (Meaning the one that showed 0% loss has 50-80% loss and the other has 0%..) So I've been through all processes to try eliminate this as a local fault. Steps taken: Replaced DSL router, Replaced network & telephone cables, unplugged phone from line, Reinstalled windows, tried on a different computer, tried 3 different ISP's with different backbones (same result).

So running a traceroute to google dns, something's a bit off.. my 2nd hop times out permanently, no matter what ISP is used (http://2share.co.za/Files/tracertgoogle.PNG).

Anyone have any idea's what could be the cause and if there is anything I can try which I may have missed on my side?
Thanks

edit: Just to add, this isn't only a problem on teamspeak. Browsing, gaming, anything internet related is affected.
tl;dr Packet loss, weird problem, help!

What area are you in? I am having similar issues but only from last week Thursday.

Getting a constant 20-30% loss regardless of isp or router. Pings are all in the 9-13ms range so its not congestion.

In Benoni. Yeah, pings are absoloutely fine, still getting 7ms ping to CS:GO local mm servers. So that's not an issue. But the loss is insane.

Also in Benoni - Farrarmere. Glad to know I'm not the only one with this issue.
There was a network outage last week, but I'm of the opinion that these Telkom techies haven't a clue how these networks run.
Been seeing alot of them working in the manholes the past 2 weeks, whenever they do that, they break something.

I'm getting very similar issues at home as well on a 20MB VDSL line here in PE. First hop ping outside my network is the same as yours regardless of ISP. Sometimes Microsoft Lync will sign in but the majority of the time it doesn't. Have tried different routers but the same thing. Noise and attenuation levels are good. Sometimes it will work flawlessly and other times constant pings will be riddled with dropped packets. Haven't bothered to try and figure it out as the issues aren't giving me as many headaches as trying to sort it out with Telkom will.:wtf:

Yeah its odd, u should be connected to the rynfield exchange (my mate has the same problem as you, in more hill also connected to the rynfield exchange), I'm connected to the bonaero park exchange and experiencing roughly the same issue. Sigh. Telkom always knows how to stuff things up it seems

Correct, the Rynfield exchange, routes to the one by O Reilly Merry street.

It sounds to me like they have a severe routing issue on their main backhaul links, or some cable jockey spilled his coke and kfc on a fibre splice... :/

Ping statistics for 216.58.223.35:
Packets: Sent = 7463, Received = 6035, Lost = 1428 (19% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 9ms, Maximum = 1490ms, Average = 20ms

Large swathes of Benoni seems to have some serious issues at the moment with Telkom connectivity. It has been reported, and I will be following it up and escalating as high as I can for a quick resolution. But yes, there is significant packet loss occurring between Benoni and the primary routing point in Kempton (by the looks of things), and it seems to have started when the switch to ASSIA and the implementation of the new gateway network happened. The fact that it's happening across exchanges leads me to believe this may be related to a Metro Ethernet failure on the backhaul side.

As and when I receive updates I'll post them in here.

Thanks a lot for this reply! Been looking for an explanation like this. At least now I know I'm not going off my head and I can comfort myself knowing I'm not the only one suffering ATM. :P

Thanks for this info, I've been really having a hard time here in Morehill. Almost given up hope with Telkom.

Indeed, thank you confirming my suspicions! Lets hope they fix it asap, cant work because of all the damn disconnects! :|

Same thing here in Richmond KZN.

Packet loss, and very random disconnects for a few minutes at a time, regardless of ISP.

Latency and speeds seem to be normal...

Telkom started implementing a new DSL management system at the end of last year (ASSIA). The new profiles makes use of interleaving, non ASSIA profiles makes use of fast path, apparently.

Not sure exactly what this means. All I know is that I was getting time-outs just browsing, my ping jumped. The profile was changed back again and fixed most things except gaming. It may be the source of other people's issues.

I've escalated the issue to the relevant area managers, as well as their supervisors. If all else fails, I will escalate to senior management at Telkom as well. Will hopefully hear some feedback today still.

Update: the problem has been identified as an issue with the link to Kempton Park. No resolution time-frame yet, but I will update once this has been communicated to me.

Interim update: the teams have done a stellar job at Telkom to pick up the problem so quickly and they are busy fixing it. Already browsing is returning to normal and the packet loss is reduced dramatically. I am liaising directly with the Telkom teams fixing the problem and will update once the confirmation of resolution is sent.

Many thanks to a certain forum member who has helped liaise information around Telkom as well (not mentioning by name to avoid inundation of requests). Looks like the problem will be properly solved within the next 2 hours.

Sometimes you really have to appreciate great work, and this is another occasion where Telkom have gone over and above to get an issue resolved. We need more guys like these working at Telkom - NOT LESS!!!!

/sending mail to Telkom CEO

Definitely impressive work! Thanks a lot for the feedback and effort :)

It's a pleasure. I have received confirmation that this problem has been resolved now. If anyone is still have any browsing or packet loss issues in Benoni and surrounding areas drop me a PM and I'll see what I can do for you.

Saw an improvement from around 10pm last night, with it becoming completely stable this morning!

Thank you for the assistance on the matter, work can now resume as per normal :)
