Quit DStv repeats or we will quit you

The number of repeats is actually not excessive at all.. The ads yes I will agree with that... but I doubt they've got that model completely bedded down from a price point of view..

My pleasure in DSTV is quite low at the moment. The increasing price is not welcome. But the fact that things are repeated is tolerated as it allows me to get some of the content I want when the good missus has recorded her programmes. I watch very little live with the sole exception of some sport. So I would rather that the group puts pressure on the price than the repeats .

If you scroll to the bottom of the page, http://www.sky.com/shop/b/sky-bundles/

You get 12 months free broadband (up to 17mb + you have to pay for line rental) with any bundle you purchase, you also get to choose between a Galaxy Tab or gift card.

Yeah I see that...

And it is a good(ish) deal.. but it still doesn't make it miles cheaper or more affordable than DSTV.. it makes the satellite aspect roughly the same.

Netflix must be loving it. The pay-TV broadcast model's arrogance mimics the arrogance of Blockbusters, Kodak, Microsoft. Netflix has marginally increased prices once, whereas in 15 years time Premium will be R1350 per month for an array of repeated content only. Meanwhile broadband gets cheaper and cheaper.

One thing about DSTV that will never change. They do not care about the wishes of customers. DSTV is not a national asset.

You may actually that DSTV do care about their general customer, otherwise they wouldn't still exist.

Yeah but those TV services from all around the world are cheap as ****.
This here.

Define cheap as **** if you please?

Don't get me wrong here, I am not entirely happy with the price DSTV charges, but they are not way out of whack with international norms in terms of their pricing, and their sports coverage is pretty damn good.
If you take salary and the relative value of currency into account DSTV is even more out of whack with international norms than we initially think. I agree with MC on the issue. If we take away repeats we end up with no content or less channels and people complaining the opposite again. We shouldn't be paying what we do pay for it.

This here.

We can disagree on this then....

They show international content, which obviously means an international currency transaction and a large portion of their pricing has to be based off this fact.

But the argument was international pricing of the service. This is why I don't take DSTV's excuses seriously as they keep changing them. When I did this calculation previously the equivalent Sky package the family bundle with 80 channels and 240 free-to-air channels was more comparable to our Premium package at R600. In terms of the Big Mac index it's 12 Big Macs while for DSTV it's over 31. That's nearly 3 times more expensive for DSTV factoring in the new pricing vs Sky plus they throw in free broadband internet. The equivalent Sky package is not the R1200 one you mentioned as it also gives more value than DSTV premium but even then DSTV loses out on the Big Mac index by being about a third more expensive.

I also don't buy the international currency transaction issue as content providers are not oblivious to local market conditions and will charge less in regions that can't afford to pay the full international price. Even so assuming it the case currency rates factor into the price it doesn't excuse what MC is charging. It's all the more reason they should enable more people to subscribe by charging less and not more to make up for the cost.

I have a feeling the latest increase in light of all the other increases has just been the final straw that breaks the camel's back and if everyone makes do on their threats they will lose out more than what they gain.

No they won't. You live in a dream world if you think companies do things from the goodness of their heart. They have shareholders and an expected ROI... this doesn't change because they feel sorry for the poor people.

Don't take Sky's 80 channels and 240+ free to air, too seriously. The majority are crap. Sky Atlantic is very good. I liked Sky Arts because they covered music very nicely. Other than that its like the song "57 channels and nothing on". Except, "300+ channels and nothing on". And reruns. Lol. People complain about DSTV reruns. Sky has channels dedicated to reruns. For example you have ITV, then you have ITV+1, which is basically exactly the same as ITV but 1 hour later.

The movie channels repeat like nobodies business.

They spread the good channels across bouquets so that you have end up buying multiple bouquets and thats when the price starts racheting up. To get the good movie channel + sport + doccies, you end up paying around £65 a month.

Yes they will and they do. It's not out of "goodness" but exactly because shareholders are expecting an ROI that they have to charge market related prices. Unaffordability = no ROI. You are living in a dream world if you believe MC's crap and that every region and country pays the same ito U.S. dollars.

Yes it's crap but the point is that it's the same quality of crap than DSTV so it's comparable. You have to pay more to get the whole package of course but unlike here you don't need to pay for the whole package if you want just 1 channel on it but even if you do it's still cheaper.

No they obviously don't pay the same, but its still charged in an international base currency such as the USD.

I would actually assume in some cases, due to lower subscriber numbers that MC would be charged MORE not less.

They don't get charged more for having lower subscriber numbers but they don't always get charged less. That inflates the cost per capita if they have less subscribers which is all the more reason to make it affordable to as many people as possible to reduce that cost.

Repeats of doccies are useful when I want to record different programs and the times clash. Explora just finds another slot (a repeat). It's a bummer when there's no repeat later - I then have to cancel the first scheduled record, find a repeat for that, and then go back go the second pgm and schedule that for recording.

I watch about two TV movies a year, so repeats there aren't an issue.

I wonder how many of the people complaining actually rely on repeats to see their programs without realising it.

The easiest way to bring Multichoice to there knees is to stop supporting Supersport.
