RAIN unusable at night

I cannot be happier ditching my ADSL and using Rain. Had one period in 2 months and AHost informed us as a general problem on the network. I always have full signal and speeds of up to 70mbps. Average is over 30. It seems one must check different areas as the speeds could be tower/area specific. As per my separate post the only problem of short range is fixed by using a bridge to my ADSL router
I don't experience any drops.

Doesn't help if you leave out area & what you are using the connection for. I'm sure there are people all over the country enjoying their RAIN connection browsing the internet and checking their email. My issue with it being too slow to use with frequent drops is in CPT, Southern Suburbs area. I'm getting ping times of 600 - 1000ms when playing online games and streaming content from netflix or twitch stalls and buffers and resets the quality every 30 seconds. It's absolutely useless if you want to play games online. It was advertised as "fiber in the air" to me and it's far worse than my adsl on rotting old infrastructure. Nothing close to the experience they sold me...

Buy cell-c 200g package - lasts for a year and in 6 months normal surfing habits I still have 130g left.

Same for me

Download : 0.39 mbps
Upload : 1.30 mpbs

I even created a twitter bot that automatically does a speed test and sends the results over twitter to RAIN in order to get some support but they never replied or got in contact with me.

The bot still sends them speedtest and logs them but they simply do not care.

That's my current speed yesterday I could only get 4 Mbps and they wanted to blame coverage for that at Axxess but I used to get 60 Mbps no matter what time of the day it was.

I've had Rain since September last year when Afrihost first brought it out. It has been brilliant for me right up until this week. I was getting speeds on Fast.com of up to 75Mbps in the Durban area. Now in the evening I can no longer stream even SD quality Netflix. I cancelled ADSL because it was so good. I think I have buyers remorse. :(

This was bound to happen (ie congestion issues).

In the end I think a good solution would be to go with a private WISP (fixed wireless) company, in your local area. I had to switch from ADSL after telephone cables got stolen and never got replaced...to a WISP, about a year ago. SUPER happy with uncapped 4mbps line. YES its NOWHERE NEAR LTE speeds, BUT, at least its a STABLE wireless connection, with downloads and streaming constantly at 400kb/s and above.

I'm sure most guys would agree that the stability of a wireless internet connection trumps an overpopulated LTE tower any day, and with private WISPs you will certainly get what you pay for.

Not aware of any such companies in my area.

Same thing in Pretoria. I don't have great signal strength, but I get 20mbps early morning. After 18:00, it drops to 1.5 or less. Some nights I cannot even get speed test to run. I'm getting sentech flashbacks

No change - very good any time of the day. I always have full signal.

I did a test yesterday using https://testmy.net where I tested the speed of my connection once every hour from 9:25 to 19:25. You can change this interval according to your needs. Choose the "Auto Test" option.

This was my results https://testmy.net/compID/180826650188

Max download I got was around 12.8 Mbps going all the way down to only 960kbps for the last test which was at 19:25.

I am in Roodepoort with Afrihost and using a B315 modem.

Yep proves that rain's network is congested

Yes, when the network isn't congested, speeds are high.. otherwise, slower than bloody analog...

Results on the same IP, within 10 minutes:

Rain say that there are areas (like mine) where congestion's an issue. My question, why then make it available? And, only 1800 Mhz, there is no 2600 Mhz in my area.. and by the looks of it.. most areas.

Waist of money.

My signal used to be 3 sometimes 4 bars (I'm about 1,5km away from the tower). It's 1 bar now lol. Plus k@k speed & high ping. Gave up my Vodacom internet for this which I regret now. The B618 router is nice though. But that's about it. Rain, I hope you get your sh@t together if you are reading this. I had high hopes for you.

Lesson learned here: The higher the expectation, the bigger the disappointment. So there.

Daytime there are no issues for me, but it's at night when everybody is on Netflix or playing games that we have issues. Here's a Speedtest from a feew minutes ago. Weird thing, my reception lights are up and down constantly but even on 1 light I get speeds like this (I'm close to the edge of the coverage map for our area).

No, they write back to you telling you they will investigate and that's about as far as it goes. Interestingly whenever I create a ticket for Fixed Wireless in their client zone it gets deleted after they respond. There are no records of previous tickets other than the emails I get. I think that basically all these ISP's are just resellers of the Rain network. I don't think they have any real fingers in the operations at all.

Mine stay a constant 7mbps, day or night. Very annoying but I don't really download much.

I got an update from my SP :

The Rain network is aware of all the issues on it's network currently.
They have committed to dealing with it but its going to take some time.

They have many upgrades that's needed and their products did record sales / growth with the double deal causing some issues.

There is other clients experiencing exactly the same issues as you are currently.

Thank you.

Regards,

I will give them until end of this month, if there is not a DRASTIC improvement i'm moving over to CellC's new LTE. Im gatvol of all this mediocre services, If its not Telkom its RAIN.

My speed was running at a blistering 2mb/s last night.
