*READ FIRST* iBurst Network Status & Issues (DNS, Throughput and Latency)

How does a problem at your hosting facility "degrade" your whole network? iBurst isn't a hosting company, you are an ISP, I do not understand? And what does "degrade" mean because in yesterday's case it seemed to denote complete failure of your network? Can I suggest that if your "upstream providers" so consistently let iBurst down, iBurst should change to other more reliable providers? You can get away with blaming "upstream providers" only so often before it starts to look silly - sure, maybe they're unreliable or you have a poor SLA, but at some point you have to take responsibility for having chosen those providers and not switching to new providers if they consistently make you look bad.

I first experienced a problem authenticating around 9am yesterday (2010/12/26) morning, at the time I was reconfiguring my router, so I assumed it was that, but then saw an update to this thread.

I assume even authentication servers need to be hosted somewhere, so a problem with the host may impact everyone.

Internet access providers have significant amounts of hardware for both the core network and support infrastructure. This would include core routers and peering routers, transmission equipment and many servers. This includes the many servers for authentication, caching as well as ancillary services like website and mail services. All of this requires hosting space.

Most access providers would have equipment in multiple hosting facilities so a failure in one facility would put the network in a degraded state and this would put the network 'at risk' of a major outage should a second failure occur. All of the most critical infrastructure would be duplicated across all facilities and would failover to the backup systems. Sometimes this failover is not instant and this may be what you were experiencing.

Excellent analysis and well written.

We initially started with a single provider for hosting but repetitive failures (can't count them on my fingers any more and need to use my toes as well) has resulted in us having to build our own secondary data centre.

We are also migrating all billing and voice systems to be duplicated across these centres. In addition, we have 800 links and 23 RF rings that need to be balanced across these data centres. To achieve this goal we have put in place a 10 Gb/s fibre ring spanning 170km with 26 major nodes. Due to the scale of the network, this work will take about 3 months as it can only be done during scheduled change windows. Some of this work has been completed.
The upstream transits will also be provisioned at separate independent facilities.
I apologize for the inconvenience and while we would probably never be able to eliminate outages or failures, we will soon be in a better position to minimize the time period of these and limit the level of degradation.

webmail login issue.

Getting the same here, can't login or send/receive email.

Also, I find it erratic browsing today.

Yes, there was a mail issue which is effecting some subscribers related to the ungraceful power outage after Christmas. The guys are working on it.

I notice some strange response times on networks 3 upstreams away. I can only assume the weather in the US and Europe has had an adverse affect on connectivity. Will investigate further.

Mail issues

Mail issues are resolved.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

Having some difficulty in contacting the people in the northern hemisphere. I think they have given up and started building igloos.

My browsing is stil laffected quite badly. On average there's about a ten, fifteen second delay between me clicking on the link, and the page starting to upload, or I get a load error.

Strange 'cos the download speed shows as being fairly high.

yep speedtest speeds are excelent, but ya browsing seems to be a bit laggy ?

Anyone else having a painful browsing experience? Websites taking forever to open (if they do), timeouts when trying to open most sites (including Google and MyBroadband) resulting in having to try 5 or 6 times to open a site, etc.

EDIT: I see on the iBurst website that Krugersdorp is reported as "Down". Guess that's the cause, hope they fix it soon.
