*READ FIRST* MTN Network Status & Issues (DNS, Throughput and Latency)

Isn't this due to a lack of towers?

Isn't a contributory reason for lack of towers the fact that people veto the erecting of towers?

Finally a thought for those worried about being near to a tower - the more towers per sq m, the lower the signal power of each tower. So isn't more towers less of a risk?

Hi

Not sure if anyone could offer any advice on MTN connections, I would appreciate any tips that I get

MTN's speed has slowly deteriorated to near pointless levels in my neighbourhood. I connect via the Bluetooth modem on my N73. I far as I know none of the settings have changed or been modified. There are times when dialup speeds would be dream.
Unfortunately Vodacom isn’t an option because I’ve tried them and the signal is even worse.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks

Well happened last night again.

Browsing happily using opera mini, then 20:25 my chick sends me an sms to go to mxit. So I dc off opera and can't get another connection.

No matter what ap I used or whether I switched my phone off and on again.

Only thing that helped was when I switched my phone to gprs only, then suddenly I got a connection. I take it this means the tower in my area is overloaded?

Im getting fed up with this. The Network keeps slowing down during the so called peak hours 19:30-22:00 to the point where you get disconnected and unable to reconnect for hours. I have reported this issue over a month ago and to this day Mtn has done nothing.

I have phoned there support desk at 173 and 1555. They had me remove my data card from my computer, they had lower my network speed to Edge (and even if that would have worked it is pointless using edge for my work), they have asked me to change network setting. When nothing happens the ask me to hold the line and EVERYTIME 1 min later they hang up the phone. When you phone back its the whole proses all over again...If they even pick up the phone that is. If they want to put you on hold the might as well ask you number and phone you back.

I have been working online every evening for that past two years now. When the power cable was stolen and all Mtn towers was down in Brits we still had to pay for our month. I lost 2gig of data usage because of it. Now Im forced to pay twice as much because I always have to keep a backup Vodacom sim card around so I just can get my work half done. I chose Mtn because it was faster and more reliable, but not any more.

Last night was down for at least 45mins from 20:00. Going to gprs only didn't help though. Couldn't even check my balance using *141#, kept getting "request not completed".

So I just gave up and tried an hour later. Lo and behold. Working again.

I've been with Mtn since the end of 2003, so it's 5 years now with my cell number. It's been about 3 and a half that I actually made use of gprs and 3G. I've noticed a slow and steady decline over the years with performance. While I'm usually always covered with a voice capable signal, data has become very bad this year.

I sometimes cannot get on no matter what I do. Other times I get a connection but then data doesn't transfer. Worse of all is how weak the 3G signal is. I gave up trying to use it because of that.

I hope MTN sorts themselves out soon.

I've been using MTN at my house for a year now, at HSDPA connection.
So what changed in the last few weeks that I barely got 3G or EDGE. I didn't even know my E220 could do EDGE, but lately it just seems to park in that area.
Could they down grade a tower?

I'm getting really tired of this now. How does is work that the same tower goes from HSDPA to 3G to EDGE and back again all the time? If the signal was that bad, I would not get a full bar when it goes to HSDPA and a 1 or 2 bar strength when on EDGE, right?

Is this like short wave radio in the old apartheids days?

Well last night, starting earlier though. Around 18:00 this time.

Frequent disconnects. My phone switching between 3g, edge, gprs every few seconds.

Sigh.

Went back to gprs only.

I'm so glad my contract is over at the end of the month, bye bye MTN. Your help is as c%$p as your network.

Last night had frequent disconnects even when on gprs only.

Maybe I should get two cups with a piece of string...

I posted the following as a new thread before I noticed this one:

Since yesterday I've been experiencing problems with connecting to the MTN network via my E220 modem. It dials up, gets as far as connecting, then suddenly brings up a connection error warning. This happens before it tries to authenticate. The sim is a prepaid, it has data and there's three bars of signal. Anybody got some advice on how to troubleshoot the problem?

I've been a user for over 2 years from the same position (I use the modem in a desktop pc), and can't think of anything that's changed from my side.

Anyone able to help? The problem still persists.

Try changing the APN by going to settings>>connection>>>and under APN change it to internet then make sure the username & password are blank.

So after days of perfect operation mtn strikes again.

Last night I had the no connect problem from 17:00.

That's right. 17:00 is now also peak.

Didn't matter whether I set my phone to gprs only or 3g.

Didn't matter which access point I used.

Didn't matter that I had airtime AND a data bundle on my phone.

Didn't matter how many times I switched my phone off then on again.

I left it for 45min then miraculously it started working again.

Had a numerous disconnects between 20:00 and 22:00, but that's par for the course now...

I am glad not the only one getting the 619 error :) signal always drops constently to edge i can dream on about getting a consistent hsdpa signal at nights anymore. My favorite is phoning the corporate help desk and they dont answer there phone the connection just gets droped when they pick up. Anyway i got rid of mtn now.
