*READ FIRST* MTN Network Status & Issues (DNS, Throughput and Latency)

I had a good night last night, only disconnected 9 times (4 during boss fights in WoW). At least this time I could connect :(

when i connected it is pretty stady. the problem i have is to start the connection.

Hi
Remember if you are using a handset as a modem especially over bluetooth there are always issues. I personally have this problem of disconnects etc.
Regards

Yip, I'm in the Fourways/Randburg area and the speeds are shocking. I have a post here regarding it. It only seem to affect my E220 modem though. If I connect with my cell phone, it's a little slow, but nowhere near as dead as with the E220

Is customer loyalty important to MTN?

My Procall 120 is up for renewal as it expires in a couple of months, so I toddled along to the MTN store closest to me.

As MTN have changed all their packages I needed to choose from the new offerings, so I told them I was interested in moving to the Anytime 200 with a Nokia E71 phone.

Yup, that was possible said the sales guy, so I said let's do it. At that point I was told that I would have to pay in R800 odd for the privilege, whereas if I did not renew, but took a new new contract then I would not have to pay the R800.

These people are telling me that if I DON'T renew my contract I can get a BETTER deal???? i.e. they are telling to look around the market and MAYBE include them in my next short-list, which becomes increasingly unlikely as my loyalty obviously means nothing to them! Come on guys, this is just not good enough!

And they wonder why they lose customers.

P.S. I'm not sure that this ONLY applies to MTN, I'm guessing it applies to the whole industry.

Customer loyalty is a thing of the past... its all about money now - and it doesn't just apply to the cellular market.

Maybe take the hint. Port your number elsewhere.

Or if you really wanna stay with them, down grade to prepaid, then in a month get a new contract.

Hi
Can you provide more details?

Firstly the MTN 200 is a lower package than the Procall 120 hence it is considered a downgrade.

Regards

First the good news. I got through to the right level in MTN and the upgrade is in process.

@Dr Data - Upgrade/Downgrade, it makes no difference. You have the case of a customer whose contract is in the process of expiring. Your choice is to either sell him what he is requesting, or force him to start looking around and thereby choose a solution from your competitor. He could even take his old number with him in the process, so no inconvenience to him. That doesn't seem like a good business decision to me.

Well done. Why must one always kick up a fuss?

My contract expired 6 months ago. I am now on month to month and MTN won't allow me to downgrade to prepaid from Contract. Now that is dodge! I now want to give cancellation notice as I am committed to porting to Virgin. Does anyone know if their data connectivity is any good?

They only have an EDGE network. Although 50c a meg is great.

What we really need is for the credit crunch to hit really hard and for
people not to be able to afford cell phone subs. Yes it's evil thinking but
maybe with a recession and dropping customer numbers telcos will
fight more to retain customers instead of treating them poorly or answer
to their shareholders when profits drop.

Good service is long gone except when dealing with small businesses
where you can sometimes deal directly with the CEO or owner. When you
deal with corporates like MTN, MIH (DSTV), Telkum and Vodascum
you won't ever win unless you're a huge corporate yourself with
many accounts to your name and threaten to port them all elsewhere.

What the Hell is wrong with MTN's network?

Hi

I am pulling my hair out! Here's why

Average time for google ping: 3000ms
Average time for mybroadband.co.za ping: 2450ms

What the hell is going on?

New MTN packages are terrible

I also got this sort of thing. However, other than the notice of a phone pay-in for certain contracts printed in font size 4 there are two more hidden payments. The first is R100 just for kicks. It is printed in small letters at the bottom of those terrible yellow papers they call price lists. OK, so R100 if you stay with them, no reason at all. After 3 hours of waiting and filling in papers the sale person was on the phone with MTN trying to approve my upgrade or something like that. I was informed of a R300 globack (kloubak, clobeck, glowback, not sure, could never hear what they say but they seem to understand what I say when I repeat it) cost. They told me that everyone must pay this if they do NOT take the Anytime 500 package. Ridiculous.

So, R400 to stay with them and get a contract which will probably cost me R3 a minute. R200 +- SIM connection fee if I move to Vodacom. Mmm... Depends on what they want to charge for concellations...

The branch employees told me that many of their customers are choosing to rather cancel their contracts. This is probably the worst move MTN has made in a long time. The whole thing is strongly marketed as being easy and simple, but I suppose I haven't watched the "3 words" commcercial enough to believe that my experience thus far was simple.

There is a rumour that Vodacom is going down the same road. I suppose I'd better sign for 2 years of a proper contract ASAP.

P.S. From what I could gather, the cloback cost is based on your current contract phone and is a sort of penalty for upgrading. I am not sure if this means that you pay the last 3 months of your phone cost so that you can go on the new package immediately.

Oh you actually have a connection? We are rarely able to even make a normal voice call these days. (We = my wife and I). And if GPRS does actually work it drops soon and is also slow like that. There is definitely something bad going on. Probably these new horrible contract packages that broke the system somehow...
