*READ FIRST* MTN Network Status & Issues (DNS, Throughput and Latency)

MTN internet speed challenges have impacted my ability to work and game from home. I have logged numerous tickets with their coverage desk but you might as well be speaking to a rock even though I provide them with speedtest results.

I make use of MTN and Axxess data sims and have access to different LTE routers and mobile devices to test connectivity. Latency and Bandwidth has been especially problematic over the last 2 to 3 months.

Has anyone been having "Connection timed out" issues on MTN?
The last few weeks every 2nd page I open has to get refreshed to or 3 times before it loads due to timing out.
I'm in Cape Town.
 
Our 20mbps uncapped LTE is doing fine.

I noticed my MTN (Afrihost APN) is routing via JHB instead of CPT, something must be broken somewhere in CPT, since just after 21:00.

@AfriNatic have you received any notices from MTN, etc?

There was an outage. MTN Tygervalley to Teraco Rondebosch NLD. Traffic automatically shifted to the backup route via JHB.

OK, here is my issue. We stay in Widenham on the South Coast(close to Scottburgh) and got awesome speed with our mobile data (200 down 80 up) but on a contract that only have 30gb of anytime data. I tried to upgrade to the uncapped FIXED LTE which MTN themselves were not willing/capable to do for me. I then took out an uncapped contract at Axxess but the speeds were beyond slow and I canceled it within the first week.
I then changed my 30gb plan to the 200gb anytime data plan (which is not fixed lte) (https://www.mtn.co.za/shop/deals/contract/mobile-internet-diamond/MBB200GB) which worked great (200 down and 80 up) for a couple of days. Unfortunately for the last 5/6 days my speed is about 18 down 2 up. I dont see any outages on downdetector. Any ideas recommendations would be appreciated.
 
Upload speeds on MTN 4G, 4G+, 5G in Sea Point Cape Town:

Noticed less than 1Mbps upload speeds on speedtests from MTN devices around Sea Point over the past months.
Speeds used to be consistently excellent in the area, but upload speeds have taken a nosedive.

I'm not referring to during loadshedding hours - haven't tested then specifically, but certainly tested repeatedly outside of loadshedding hours, on multiple devices, and in at least 3 locations around the suburb.

Tested on Samsung devices (and also a Huawei LTE router on their fixed wireless product) using 5G as default, and also after 'forcing' 4G, where it displays as 4G or 4G+.
Also tried various speedtest servers in Cape Town (including MTN's own server) and other cities.
The issue far pre-dates the recent undersea cable breaks, not that those should matter for speedtests to local servers for the most part.

Anyone else noticed the same issues in the area / has there been any comment from MTN's network team?

5G on MTN is often not great in my experience, normally not faster than 4G and poor signal quality, maybe worth disabling it.

I've found mixed results with 5G often a bit faster. But, all irrelevant for my issue here, since testing revealed the same results on all MTNs networks.

Had to venture into the CBD today... full signal strength...data slow AF...mentioned to a colleague, says the new normal it seems for MTN....towards/closure to the Foreshore lightning fast.

Thanks for that feedback.

Are you referring specifically to the upload speeds? Because download is still great for me, and has been throughout.

If you're able to screenshot a speedtest or two in the area, and let me know which device you tested on, maybe we can establish a pattern to escalate to MTN.

that may be related to the upload throughput being so bad that your devices/apps requests don't even make it to the servers. That's actually what led to me discovering the issue initially some months back.. apps just weren't loading their content.

Asked someone this Monday night in Three Anchor Bay to test with their iPhone, and their upload speed was fine.
I was a couple roads away, testing with a Samsung S22 and got less than 1mb upload on speedtest.net.

Which device were you using?
And if you know, which device does the colleague use?
