Router Battery Backup

If anyone wants to add USB-C output to their router UPS boxes, R40 odd for a 65W daughter board on Temu and they get good reviews.

Handy thing if you are using those LifePo4 UPS boxes with high wattage outputs that can run up to 100W. You can power a laptop or SFF pc etc via USB C. I'm going to use one with a USB-C to Dell small pin power converter cable to run my Sff Jellyfin server.

You could also use the USB-C port as a easy way to buck/boost using one of these USB-C input daughter boards:

I just discovered an interesting thing with these Elecstor CORE 300W 314WH Lithium Power Stations, they can be used as a UPS because they can be charged while using the output including the AC, which makes them really attractive and amazing value when they are marked down to R959.

Most of them do work like a ups but they don't advise or tell people that.

It's to protect the battery and prevent possible fires. The charging circuit is not designed to charge and output at the same time which in turn cause overheating and can damage everything if it fails.

That surely cant be true because then there'd be serious accidents happening all the time, you cant have a major risk vector like that and both fail to design protections against it and not advise users of the risks?

Even more so considering so how easy it would be for users to find themselves in that situation, that would be a design that is inherently dangerous and would easily make them liable.

How would one wire this?

How would one wire this?
Make a parallel connect to the 12v output or whichever output is closest to the units battery voltage.
What is the closest voltage to the battery pack voltage in the LifePo4 ups boxes?

I picked up the Elecstor Mercury Edition 100W 75WH LiFePO4 Mini UPS today.

It's on sale for R429 @ Takealot.

Link:
This should be below cost, surely? It's a steal. The black version goes for R999 @ Takealot. The same one goes for R1 436 @ Geewiz. These were prices above R1600 in when loadshedding was still a daily occurrence.

That is a very good price, pity the USB-C output is hobbled seems it's just low wattage

I'll test it out this evening. According to the specification is should be able to deliver 5V and up to 3A. So 15 watt. It's not a fast charger, but also not useless by any means.

My old ASUS RT-AC68U router was a bitch.

Firstly it required 19V DC so I had to get Mini UPS that supported that. Then it had a non standard power connector so I had to butcher the wires to get it connect to the UPS. And when load shedding hit, it completely drained the UPS after just 3 hours.

Got a new ASUS 12V router two weeks ago. Did not connect to UPS until load shedding. Then I discovered it has a standard power connector and the UPS lasted 4 hours without even breaking a sweat.

And the new router is quad core vs dual core and WIFI 6.

I wonder how they manage that price.... I think the batteries alone cost more

So soon it'll be back to that?

I'm not sure. Unless they desperately want to offload stock for some reason, I guess the price will return to normal soon. I ordered yesterday because I assumed it would be back to the normal price today. But it is still available at the moment.

Also found and ordered the Elecstore Mercury at R429. Great price for what is promised.

However, the unit I received has a broken warranty seal. It's a very clean cut and barely visible. Looks like it's either very intentional, or very unintentional.

Anyone here who received one recently? What does the warranty seal look like on yours?

Not sure how good the warranty even is, but I guess I'll have to send the thing back.

Refurbished units?
