Router Battery Backup

In case you didn't see it there is also the UltraLAN Micro UPS from Uniterm. It has the same battery capacity as the Ratel 860P (8 x 2200mA Li-ion Batteries) but with a few differences to it.

Pros of the Ratel 860P:
  • Smaller
  • Has 2 x 5V USB ports
  • Has a 5V DC output
  • Doesn't have a bright af display
  • Includes a DC/DC splitter cable
Cons
  • No load display.
  • PoE is not Gigabit
Pros of the UltraLAN
  • Cheaper, especially if you go to Uniterm and mention you are a MyBB member.
  • Gigabit PoE
  • That bright af display shows the load on the unit
  • More outputs (4 x 12V/3A, 4 x 12V/1.5A, 2 x 9V/1A outputs)
Cons
  • No USB ports
  • No 5V output
  • Includes only a single DC/DC cable
  • The barrel jacks are slightly different in size and may not fit all devices, but this was only a problem for me with the extra cables Uniterm made for me. The included cable fit all my devices.
Here are a few images comparing the size of the UltraLAN to the Ratel 860P and what its display looks like:

Are you sure about the gigabit PoE on the ultralan?

The Ratel is better if you're only doing DC, but the cube has the option of 240V too. I guess your use case will determine which you need. I think Communica has stock of the Ratel.
OK so the other partners voted on the cube since it looks like it could withstand a nuclear bomb so picked up 6 in Woodmead, let's see how goes.

There's a lot of love for Sunsynk on the forums.

The datasheet says it has max output of 12W. Would be interesting to know if this is accurate.

I can't seem to find a link to the cube with the 240V option, linky please?

Interested to see what the options are ito the Ellies cube with 240V or even the Sunsynk cube, I still need a way to power my 48V Ubiquiti Switch8, which none of the current backup solutions (Ratel, Gizzu, etc.) can do afaik.

Are there any local distributers for the Sunsynk cube?

That unit looks great! How much is it? Prices don't show on the site unless you register

Apologies. The Cube doesn't have 240V, my bad.

Probably a long shot but the only reason I bought the UltraLAN was because it has Gigabit PoE and I was hoping to run a PoE AP on it that could do 1300Mbps on the 5GHz band. However, any AP that offers more than 867 Mbps requires 48V PoE which neither this unit nor the Ratel supports. However, one thing that the Ratel does support and something which I just found out that I need is 5V DC for my VoIP phone, because it too will not work with 24V PoE. For some strange reason it also requires 48V PoE.

So if anyone is considering buying the UltraLAN and would be willing to buy mine or swap with me for a Ratel 860P please PM me. My unit is only a week old and I'd be willing to cover shipping & take a knock on what I paid because I didn't do enough research before I purchased it. :cautious:
Well, generally the POE on these small units are meant for "Passive" 12-24v rather than "Active" 48V

Cool cool np. I'll keep looking, tks!
I confused the Ellies Cube thing with this: https://sinetechstore.co.za/shop/solar-kits/off-grid-solar-kits/sps-1200-portable-power-station/

Your average laptop will take that 19V without a problem. Check your specs though. E.g. the Ratel 8100 can push 95W (19V at 5A), not that I have seen a laptop pull that much for basic tasks. Getting the correct plug will be your issue indeed, although personally, one can get adapter plugs, or even re-purpose a secondhand/universal laptop power brick's cable...
i am finding it difficult locating the adapter plugs locally for a lenovo (type c to 5mm cable/adapter) and dell laptop(7.4mm to 5mm cable/adapter). Enquired with the sellers of these Ratel 8100 and their response is they do not have any other cables other than what is provided with the product.

So is the idea that I just leave the Ratel plugged in permanently sending power to my other devices?

My daughter wants to plug a 12v battery into her 9v router. Will it fry?

Some routers are tolerant of higher voltages but the rule of thumb is to stick to the rated voltage. I wouldn't chance it.

Her best bet would be to get what's called a buck converter to step down the 12V to 9V that the router would accept. Some soldering may be required if she wants to follow this route as it's not a plug and play solution.
