Rugby: Springboks 2008 Thread

I was sooooo glad when twatson (just saw this :D) was replaced by Burger .... that guy is a monster :D And speaking of monsters, /me is glad Beast got his first try and the fact that the Newlands crowd were shouting Beeeaaaassstttt whenever he got the ball :D

I think the thing about being a passionate supporter is sub standard performances hurt a lot more!! Personally the standard of rugby on display today was hurtful and on the brink of embarrassing... Conditions aside it was wet for the Italians too and to be out scrummed by them is a little humiliating. Wet or not the basics have to be done with clinical precision. The kicking out of hand from both Ricky and Francois was well below par and a more flamboyant and talented opposition would have made us pay...

OK I was about to back off and let you have your little thread but really! I have never been a huge Watson fan and do not like the politics he brings with him but can you honestly tell me that he had a crap game?!?! He was brilliant. He played a huge roll in every maul.

OK I am going to stop reading this thread now... we seem to watch the game through different glasses. The forwards were great. Yes, the Itailians had a few good scrums but we even pushed them off the ball once. If anything was wrong it was the handling mistakes by the backs at critical times.

Game was great to see live... Italians got their ass kicked, it was fun to watch that happen, especially when that Italian had a drop kick at the goals right infront... AND MISSED! OMG!

Sad that some people have such low expectations of the boks. Does not bode well for the future of the bok game.

LOL, either agree with you or get ridiculed you mean?

Well if you notice I tend to put a little more regarding the thread topic in my posts... yours are mere digs. I stated above that I felt the forwards were good and the problem lay with the handling of the backs... but of course that did not illicit any comments from you guys as you are not really interested in talking actual rugby but rather trash talking the Boks!

Apparently. I think it would be nice to have a subjective conversation with you now and then. You seem to be blindly patriotic/positive. Do yourself a favour and read the sports column off any 5 reputable newspapers tomorrow morning and let us know the journos perspective... I won't call that a good performance for the sake of not being critical, it was poor to the point of being embarrassing.

One would expect the forwards to have played well considering they were up against Italy, hardly a daunting task to dominate the Italian pack? The fact that we were out scrummed doesn't seem to bother you?!!! The fact that we turned over contested balls in the maul situation on more one occasion doesn't seem to bother you?!! We were no where in the loose today. I don't think I heard Juan's name mentioned once today. Yes we competed well in the line outs and won more than a few on the Italian throw in, yes we got the tight head towards the end and yes the rolling mauls led to 2 tries and were impressive when they got forward momentum but honestly I don't think you're being very objective when you herald that forward performance.... The backs were.... well never mind...

Hehe, ok man. I can see you are on your own mission again in this thread. See it as you will. Leave us turncoats to hate on your dear Boks some more.

Some people would call it realistic criticism of a poor performance. I guess you are just not some people...

so everyone who comments here that Steyn kicked well, Beast scored a try, De Villiers is a good centre, etc, are just trash talking

Italy claim moral victory
Cape Town - South Africa, on Saturday, beat Italy 26-0 in their one-off Test match at Newlands, but the there is little doubt that the visitors will see this as a moral victory against the world champions.

The visitors - without 13 of their first choice players according to their coach Nick Mallett - defended superbly, vigorously climbed into the rucks, on occasion spoiled the Boks' lineout possession and scrummed well.

The Springboks, on the other hand, seemed to lack urgency and made too many errors to inspire confidence two weeks before their first Tri-Nations match against New Zealand - albeit that many of their first choice players were rested.

Only in their first outing in 1995 did the Boks have a smaller winning margin (19) against Italy than in this Test.

Yep I agree with the lack of urgency which I saw as low intensity levels.

Let's just also remember that it was raining, ball was wet and thus slippery, I loved watching the players slide on the field, it was sooooooooo funny... they slid like 3/4m in a go! haha.

Some serious/deep rugby analysis there :p

Yip, further proof that this thread is in fact not for discussions... either agree with the general consensus or get ridiculed...

I doubt many have a problem with you having a positive outlook on a disappointing bok performance. It is odd...but you have every right to your own interpretation. The annoying part is how you insist on arguing with and insulting those who saw the performance differently. Can't you allow others to have their own opinions ever with out having to force them to agree with you? It seems you are unable to allow others to have their own opinion even when the world media support their opinions.
