As far as smartphones go I did the following journey:
Blackberry -> iPhone -> Android -> WP -> iPhone
It was a great journey that gave me the opportunity to experience the good and bad of 'em all.
The thing that anchored me in the Apple ecosystem is the MacBook. I've invested heavily into this ecosystem and that has now determined what my tablet and phone choices must be to make things simpler. I will not give up OSX so the rest follows. This does not mean that my criticisms of iOS evaporated or that Android is all of a sudden bad. I can even with all honesty say that Windows Phone 8.1 is a great OS (much better than most think) but Windows 8 on PC and tablet is a disaster.
I also believe Blackberry can make a comeback with their latest devices (Passport/Classic) which takes them back to their strengths.
Choice is a wonderful thing. I want to experience them all but I've come to the point where I need a solid core that stays the same.
I agree with this. There are faults with ios. There are faults with all of the mobile os's. I also became more locked into the "Apple ecosystem" because of the MacBook. I bought the Macbook because I got tired of the crap I had been dealing with from HP, Toshiba, Dell etc. I haven't looked back. And when I saw how easy it was get Windows 8.1 running through Parrellels, well. That pretty much sealed it for me. I can do ios development, OSX, development, Visual Studio for mobile, desktop and web on the same machine with minimal effort.
However, I cant see Blackberry ever making a comeback to where they where. I don't think they will disappear, but I cant see them being able to break into Apple/Samsung's market share. I hope I'm wrong because we do need more players and not fewer, but sometimes the economics just doesn't allow that many in such a high cost market.
