Samsung Galaxy S

Thanks for the detailed post, Tim182 :)
I looked up some pics of the UK charger, looks like the plug is built into the charger unit so I can't just cut it off and add an SA plug on. Oh well, not a big deal.

This is the Charger adapter i got with mine. Seems like a good solution...

Yea guess I'll buy myself an adapter then. At least it can charge from the PC so I don't need to rush out to get one.

Anyway, I have placed my order with Handtec :D
They didn't seem to include any VAT though, only been charged R4500 through the credit card. So how will the VAT be handled now?

Can't wait :D

There are very few GPS solutions for the Wave at this point either. Google maps is there but it has no turn by turn navigation in SA yet.

In case no one has mentioned this yet, there is the hacked version of Google Navigation http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630887
In the settings you can cache map tiles. The navigation mode uses vector maps so those don't cache but I haven't found data usage to be excessive...

So far so good. Not put my Sim Card in yet as i have a bit of work to do. But the screen is something worth drooling over. Will post back once i get home this evening.

ah, just realised the Wave isn't android. One reason not to go Wave?

Indeed. The Wave is the first phone with Bada, so it will need some time to catch up with Android. It will take a lot of effort from Samsung for that to happen though.
VOIP on Bada is banned, and I think apps can only be installed from the Samsung app store. Maybe someone will correct me on that though.

Maybe it will be hacked some day and people will be able to run Android on it, it is Linux based.

Lucky you! :)

Was that R4500 including shipping?

Also the price on the German site is way above 384 Euros, even after subtracting 19% German VAT...

Yes. £348.49 for the phone without VAT, £39.90 for shipping. For shipping I chose "Rest of world (UPS/Fedex)". So who actually delivers it, I don't know.
I don't know how the VAT will work though. Were they supposed to charge me when I ordered it? Hope so haha.

If you are buying the phone on a UK website, they wont charge you VAT as you are not a UK resident. You will, however be charged VAT in South Africa when the phone goes through customs, plus an extra import fee. It was mentioned earlier somewhere in the thread that you need to add on 15,4% (or thereabouts) to the price you paid, so in your case its R4500 x 15,4% = R693. So you looking at a total of approx R5193. Obviously you will then pay for the courier fee on top of that.

Thanks. I've never imported anything into SA before so I don't know exactly how this works.
The website charged a delivery fee when I chose the "Fedex/UPS" option, so will there still be a courier fee on top of that?

Did you use paypal, or a regular credit card?

I got my phone today, what an amazing device! Little warning for those ordering from overseas, there seems to be a new customs duty on phones, busy trying to look into it. 14% VAT on 110% value plus an additional 7%!!! Not sure where that came from, I paid a total customs + VAt of about R900...

Will keep you updated

This is strange. Why do they need this? I've never had this issue using a credit card before.
Shouldn't they contact Mastercard themselves for that authorization number?
