Personally I wouldn't do it like that.

1. I would root your device first by flashing CF-Root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14283342
2. Backup all important information you need using Titanium Backup (free or pro) and export a copy of your Contacts just for safety sake.
3. Download a CM9 nightly - latest http://get.cm/?device=galaxys2&type=nightly and place this on your SD-Card
4. Download GAPPS - Google stuff - as CM does not come preinstalled with this and also place on SD-Card ( http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip )
5. Boot into CWM - Make Nandroid backup ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaWfptJ3v1g )
6. Install CM9 nightly and GAPPS

The stock kernel that comes with CM9 is sufficient for beginners. If you handled all the above fine, start reading up on different kernels such s Siyah, Fluxi, Dorimanx which allows you to change settings in order to get greater battery life from your SGS2.

So I'm guessing that I need to follow some other instructions as well? Or if I follow only those on the above url will I be fine?

I keep getting error "cannot backup /data" when doing that nandroid backup on cwm. I think I'm running out of space on the card because there's no space left when I plug it into the computer, why isn't it using the other memory I think there's like 11GB free?

Ah nvm I only saw now I can select "backup to internal sd card" :o

Just flashed latest nightly cm9. Got little blue guy up now. Guess first boot is gonna take a while?
 
I might have forgotten to wipe cache etc. How to get back to the cwm recovery screen if the phone isn't booting?

Edit: nvm, found it. Have now formatted data and cache, and rebooting again after installing again. Here we go again :)
 
Google is restoring all my apps for me. I suppose after that I can just restore the data bits with titanium?

The Google restore is going to kill your data bundle! It is downloading all your apps from scratch.

No use doing a Titanium Backup restore unless you want restore the app data now...
 
Apps are coming in over wifi, so no issue there. Still at it. Want to get the data, yes
 
I've now got cyanogenmod 9 rc1 loaded and so far it's awesome, except how do I get the google maps and the navigation back? I did load the gapps-xxxx.zip and I do have the gmail and play icons but no maps :confused:

Ok I see the maps on the play store I will download it and see if the navigation comes with it

You get it back from the backups you made with titanium backup (or similar app)

I didn't make a backup using titanium backup because there was no info that I wanted to keep. I didn't know that it was to keep a copy of the apps as well :o

Never the less I have installed the google maps from the play store and the navigation is back! :)

I've now got the titanium backup installed as well to make life easier. Thanks guys!
 
We all learn. Its good to make a full backup anyway as you you can backup your APN settings, sms' certain settings for apps as well. The codeworx team suggest not restoring apps via TB as some programs don't like it and can cause FC's. I personally have never had an issue.

Also from now on you can flash newer versions of CM straight over your current setup and not lose any settings or data.

Just remember to wipe cache and dalvik cache. :)
 
Those on CM9, are there any screenshots that I can take a look at? What about the features it has etc? Are there any bugs?
