Okay, so I know what rooting is about now...

The roms and apps. Are they worth it?

How do you know which rom?

Im using Darkys rom 10.1
gotta say its better in every way:)

Sent from my GT-I9000 using MyBroadband Android App

And one that worked. It just made the SGS 2 move up on my list. Its now way higher than the HTC Sensation I was eyeballing

Wise decision, google death grip on the Sensation. Same pitfall as the Iphone4. Owned a Iphone4 and the bad reception was a constant irritation . Bought a s2 from Hantec and it is really a great phone.

Grats to all who've gotten their phones lately :) I've kinda slacked off on the forums lately but am starting to pick up again. Waiting for 2.3.4 to come out and time to start reading up on CM. Still new to android but am eager to start doing some development for it. Now if only I had some ideas... Any burning need for apps out there? :)

Used the second screen on the Iphone as favorites. Only the photos and when touched/clicked once it immediately start dialing the number. Using something similar on the s2 but you have to click the photo and then you have to click "call" on next window again. Very helpful when driving if you only have to click once

What navigation app for SA is the best and the name of a safe site/dealer to buy it from

I'm looking for an app which can navigate me home in the shortest time depending on the traffic pattens.

Hmm, that would be a business in itself. NDrive might be an option for you? I don't know, haven't checked out a lot of GPS software yet, but gathering traffic info is not what I'm looking to get into ;)

Yeah but you can make a backup before you root, so if it breaks, just reboot into recovery and restore the backup. It's a different story if you can't even get into your phone though. Then you're pretty much buggered :p

Then they can't check if your phone is rooted...

Geez, the phone is supposed to arrive in the country in 3 weeks' time, yet none of the network providers know when they are getting it. Pathetic!

It's not exactly a surprise... it's always been this way. Remember when the Desire launched? The staff in the stores didn't even know what it was but most them already had it on their systems with stock in hand :-/

it is annoying. at least virgin are advertising it, which would seem to suggest that they are going to stock it at some point :/

I went to Virgin Mobile today and spoke to one of the sales people there. She was really helpful. I asked her about the Galaxy S2 and she told me that If I were to order it today, then I would have it in 3-4 days. I tried Autopage and although they had it on their systems, they werent sure when the actual stock was to arrive.

I then walked over to mtn because I am due for an upgrade in 5 days. Firstly, when I asked the salesperson about the Galaxy S2....he didnt know what I was talking about. He asked another sales rep and she didnt know as well. They asked me if I was confused with another samsung phone which was not even similar!!!

The customer next to me started chatting because he knew about the phone and he was also waiting for it.

This isnt even the bad part. I asked about the HTC sensation as well just to get an idea about the price, and he was dumbfounded.

He checked the MTN systems and didnt see anything there. He said that the systems reflect the phones listed till August, so if the phone on the system now then it will be out after August. I have 2 contracts listed with MTN and both are due for upgrade this week. I am actually considering porting over so a network provider who knows what they are doing. I was with iTalk before this and their service was dreadful. I hope MTN dont dissapoint me here. An upgrade comes once every 2 years and I do not want to be dissapointed again.

the number of times this sort of thing has happened to me! find a good cell shop with good sales reps and build a relationship with one of them. works for me :D

Dang. That's pathetic. On the other hand, I dispute that 3-4 days thing they told you. When I asked VM when they are getting the phone, they said they don't know but that I should keep checking the website, because it will immediately reflect there once it is available.

It could have been an estimate by the sales rep, but I like the fact that VM has an idea about the pricing and potential availability of their phones. For a big service provider like MTN , it's just shocking how much their own consultants know.

I don't want to go through the hassle of porting over to someone else, so it looks like I will have to wait. If there is some tiny sliver of hope, they could probably get the phone soon even though it's not on their systems as yet and offer it to people upgrading.

Really sad that the customer has to endure all this.

This phone has some out of this world battery life... I got it on Monday, charged it to the max on Tuesday evening... the thing only died out this evening (Saturday) at around 7 or so!
OK, I havent raped the usage out of the SGS2 as every new user should be doing, but I've done a fair bit and I'm quite impressed :) Keep in mind that I always have my 3g off, all auto syncing off, mostly connect online via WiFi, so maybe these settings pushed up the battery quite a bit...

So the dual-cores do make a big difference....and the battery is still new.

Very impressive.

Not even close with my s2. Have to charge every night. Better than the dhd's battery life.
Where can I find the setting on the s2 to manually manipulate the 3g function?
