Which version of PhilZ kernel should I use?
Philz is good for Samsung stock 4.1.2, for AOSP/AOKP 4.2.x rather use the kernel provided in the ROM.

For temporarily installing a custom .zip ROM doesnt matter what you use as long as it has ClockworkMod Recovery, it will be overwritten in the install anyway.

Dont understand your steps?

If all you want is rooted stock, go into (stock) recovery, flash stock Samsung ROM file (.tar.md5) with Odin, then flash Philz kernel file (.tar.md5) after that. Reboot and you're done.

How do you flash stock Samsung ROM (.tar.md5) from recovery? I have nover done that. If you flash from PC Odin, you need to be in Download mode. But the other part is correct - you can flash the kernel also from Odin - I slipped there - haven't used PC Odin for a long time!

That's the part that usually confuses me. I am using Omega V11 (based on AOKP Build 6). Which version of PhilZ kernel should I use?
Looks like JB Omega is based om XWLSJ. The last three letters/characters is important. So in PhilZ thread, look for the kernel ending in LSJ (in theory the XX or XW preceding LSJ should not make a difference). And BTW, Omega v22 already uses PhilZ kernel.
Seems you have this:
Changelog Omega Series v11:
Based on firmware XWLP8 Android 4.03 (Date: 06/04/2012)
Modem: XXLPS
csc: XXLP7
Kernel: CF-Root XXLP7
Updated:
Google maps v6.5.1
hosts
Fixed:
Usb connection text
Theme:
Black Blue: New notification row background icon
Black Blue: Changed Tw Calendar Widget to Stock
ICS: Top taskbar icons
ICS: Fixed clock color in top taskbar
Rom is no Full Wipe
It has CF-Root kernel. Some kernels work on different ROMs (in this case LP7's kernel works on LP8)

EDIT: If you still have ICS, then you can't use PhilZ kernel as far as I know - I think he only caters for JB

EDIT EDIT: He does cater for ICS. Read his thread - I found this in there:
What kernel to choose:
The important part is the Kernel code:
XWLPX-NEE
Kernel code is in red (LPX), for this example, you need an LPX ROM. However, often, you can mix kernels when they are close: LPF kernel with LPG ROM...
NEE code doesn't matter at all, I add it for reference. It is the CSC
XW: mixed, often doesn't matter for close regions. For example, XW and XX are often interchangeable. However, mixing a BU with an XW ROM or inversly, sometimes works, but often ends in a bootloop. In that case, either boot into recovery or download mode to reflash

When did you flash your ROM. Some take a bit longer first time round. What connections are you using to lock the GPS signal? Network or GPS or both?
I have been on Slim for about 2 weeks. I use both network and GPS. Needless to say I cant use the navigation function as it keeps saying "searching for GPS"

you can flash the kernel also from Odin
Yep, that why standalone kernels are usually available in both formats; .tar.md5 for Odin (via USB) and .zip for CWMR (ClockworkMod Recovery).

And BTW, Omega v22 already uses PhilZ kernel.
You're confusing std Omega (Samsung based) and Omega AOKP. Two different ROMs based on different versions of Android.

Hi guys

Currently running Stock ICS 4.0.3 on my SII. Connected via Kies earlier. Said there was a firmware update (for Jellybean I assume) but when I tried to update it failed giving some random garbled error like [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []. Updated the Samsung Kies software but now it say it says This is the latest firmware.

So can anyone answer:
1. Is (stock) Jellybean available for SA phones to download via Kies?
2. If yes, than how do I update using Kies?

Model Number: GT-I9100
Android Version: 4.0.3
Baseband Version: I9100XXLPS
Kernel Version 3.0.15-I9100XWLP7

If you want to see this :

you need to download the official Samsung Spanish 4.1.2 JellyBean ROM and install it via Odin 3.04....sorted! :)

The official Samsung JellyBean update is rolling out so slow, that it might not reach South Africa before 2014! :wtf:

I see on www.samfirmware.com that India and Nordic Countries just got it now.

Thanks for the reply. Haven't really been following the update news. I read in January that S2 would be getting jellybean in February so I assumed it must be released by now. Ridiculous that it hasn't.

This convinced me to update to the Spanish ROM I downloaded some time ago. It was so easy, took me about 20 minutes and I've never done this before. I must admit I'm happy as can be...

The Spanish ROM is perfect.

I have not encountered one problem with it since I installed it & I get a GPS lock in two seconds flat.

The.best.official.S2.ROM.ever. :)

I'm on SlimROM, and Google Search FC's on opening. I can't use it for anything - even the voice keyboard isn't working.

Any ideas for fix? I've done a search on Play Store for an update with no results. I had previously flashed the latest GApps because of a missing Play Store - could that be the cause?

Boot into CWM, wipe cache and dalvik cache and see if that makes a difference?
