When you request assistance for anything flashing related it helps to include the ROM and version, kernal and version as well as the modem and version.

Have not flashed yet, but have rooted and used Titanium Backup to freeze and uninstall a lot of crap. Battery is better now, did a full charge and left the phone on idle but with WIFI enabled and have done a few photos and so far about 85% left after 9 hours. Still lots of room for improvement though.

Eish well let me try my best :/ ermmm I first rooted from stock 2.3.3, kernel KF3 with CF-root. I just did that so I could backup with Titanium just in case. After I flashed to 2.3.4 KG2, I rooted again (with KG2 CF-root of course). Then I loaded a stock KG2 kernel to get rid of the warning triangle on startup, and flashed back. It's all I did as far as I can recall. Baseband , kernel and build all say KG2, not sure what other details you need!

I was out and about for 2 hours now, only a bit of Whatsapp and my data slowly sapped 3mb. Battery under 70% when it was fully charged before I left! Exchange email still blank and nothing coming through :( My word

That is some heavy usage dude. Although you should let you device go through a few charge cycles before it settles down.
Also, when flashing a new ROM, you must calibrate your battery. Charge to 100%, reboot into CWM, go to Advanced, and delete battery stats. There are more complicated methods like let it drain completely, recharge, blah blah, but the simple charge to 100% and delete stats seems to be fine.

To report what your device is running go to Settings / About and refer to "Baseband Version", "Kernel Version" and "Build Number".

I was running Ninph 2.1.3 and found battery was being chomped up. This AM I went back to 2.0.2 and things getting stable again. It is really about trial and error until you find that sweet spot.

I am finding Skype is being a bit of a beech. It consumes quite a bit of battery. Still deciding if I need it that much to warrant faster battery drain.

Yeah I started this whole escapade because my Wifi connectivity was hopeless so I wanted to flash different modems to check. Now my emails don't work, battery-drain of note and weird data usage on top of that :P I don't know if they're all related or not, but this is turning out to be frustrating.

Baseband, kernel and build are all KG2 ('Gingerbread' is the only other thing I can decipher hehe). I guess I haven't read up enough yet as I don't even know what Ninph kernel is, but I thought I was taking the right baby steps :/

Is it possible to go back to 2.3.3? Or do I flash another kernel/modem/etc to try rectify my issues? Not sure on the way forward, google searches are bringing up hectic geek talk which I can't understand yet :)

I did have Skype installed earlier, going to uninstall as it just irritates me too.

Excellent thanks, I will give it a go. I got that APN switch app now, will have that active during the day so at least my data bill won't die before my battery does.

Get Droidwall from the market, it's free (requires root) and set it up so everything is blocked and then whitelist what apps can use the net. You can specify apps that can use WIFI or 3G or both. I only give 3G access to Gmail, Gtalk, Internet browsers and a few smallish things, then the rest is via WIFI only, it's cut down on my bill a lot!

Just keep in mind if you get a new app you'll manually have to enable it in the firewall each time.

For the uber-noobs who are just as clueless as me. There are probably better/more recent methods I guess, I have no idea. Just posting links that have helped me. You're still going to have to read up around all of this to avoid potential disasters anyway.

You can backup your data/apps with Titanium Backup app from Market (after rooting).

Upgraded my stock 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 without losing any data: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/entry.php/1700-HOWTO-Flash-2.3.4-on-Samsung-Galaxy-S-ii

Rooting your phone (with CF-root): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399

To flash a custom ROM after using CF-root, I think one has to manually use ClockWorkMod (CWM) Recovery as it's incompatible with 'ROM Manager' (accessible in CWM Manager):

How to use it (manually): http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...rom-zip-file-to-android-device-from-recovery/

I haven't done so yet, but I'm going to flash this custom ROM in the hope of greener pastures: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1141201

Yo guys, anyone tried --> https://market.android.com/details?id=com.valups.tivit.app.finaldstv ???
I cant quite get it, says incompatible with my device blah blah bla.... yet they confirm it works on the SGS2...

[Edit] If anyone can get the .apk install file and upload it somewhere, that would be great as well :)

TiA
Cheers

Is your SGS2 rooted dude? If so, then that is your prob :) There is a patched apk floating around that I am hopefully getting tomorrow.

Ugh. I flashed to Touch X-treme KH3 just before going to bed last night. Re-calib'd battery etc. Woke up this morning and battery was sitting at 78%. Data usage 5mb (email now works though). I only installed 3G watchdog, task killer and beautiful widgets. Wifi still terrible.

Time to return the phone methinks, gotta check how to return to stock/unroot/reset counters etc. This can't be right.

Awwww. Bad luck dude. I am on the same setup as you are now, so me thinks there is a prob with your device. Best to return it ): and get a new one :)

Alot of guys have recommeneded Juice Defender/3G Watchdog and from my experience those were two of the apps that severly drained my battery, an 'active' app of sorts that constantly monitors your phone will drain your battery.

Juice defender I agree with you. I tried it and removed it pronto. 3G Watchdog however does not seem to have an effect on battery drain for me. I also see it as an essential tool while we have such high data costs in ZA.

I guess I could test it out by uninstalling 3G Watchdog and see what it does, just out of curiosity. There's something more wrong with this phone though surely.

Is it only possible to reset flash counter by using a jig? Before I go gallivanting on Google, do I wipe and flash a stock rom through CWM, or do I go through Odin and then reset counter afterwards? ie can I use that same file that I used to flash from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 in the link I posted above. Need it stock to return it.

Has anyone used LBE Privacy Guard? I found this to be quite useful and shocking that so many of my apps try to access stuff they arent supposed to e.g. games accessing your contacts and location :wtf:

I have not had to go back to stock myself, but from what I picked up on the XDA forums you do indeed need a USB Jig to reset the counter and you can flash a stock ROM through Odin (No CWM method from what I recall).
I have just ordered 5 USB Jigs off eBay incase I need one one day. 2 for me (like spares :)). 3 for anyone else that may need one.
