Finally got my jig, now to start fiddling with different roms. A few quick questions tho:
When rooting, i understand the process, but will i lose any data on my phone? I'm talking about settings, my homescreens, widgets, apps, app data, messages, call log, contacts.. etc etc?
I really dont wanna go about installing all my apps again.. :/

How can i backup ALL that data? Titanium pro?

If i backup my data using kies, i assume i cannot import it if i install a custom rom, true?

i also want to use it for gps nav. but i would like to get an app like ndrive or copilot. which is the best for gps nav. i know one can cache maps with google maps, but i need to cache southern africa, ie for camping and stuff. also do youhave a pic or link to the car dock?

I have not tried nDrive, but I do have a licensed copy of CoPilot. I use CoPilot when I don't want to use my data connection otherwise I use Google Maps. I prefer Google Maps because of the way it backs up my starred locations to my google account. CoPilot does not do this from what I can see. Google Maps only allows 10 cached locations which is also a limitation. They each have their strengths and weaknesses I suppose.

Here is an unboxing vid of the car dock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acjPAunLk_Y

I do a full system data and user apps/data with Titanium periodically. When flashing a new ROM I restore everything.
When going to a new kernel or a changed Android version (2.3.4 to 2.3.5 for ex) I sometimes get FC's on system apps after a restore. All I do then is go to the Settings / Applications and clear the data for that application. All comes right then.

Get the Pro version of Titanium otherwise you will get prompted for each application during a restore. I have 163 on my phone (including sys) so that would be very painful. The Pro version just wizzes through.

After the restore, reboot your phone. Sort out any FC's (as mentioned above) if any and you are good to go.

If you use DroidWall, make sure you untick it when doing a restore. If it is not restored last it seems to lose your settings for some applications if those applications are restored AFTER DroidWall during the restore process. Just restore everything except DriodWall, then do DroidWall on it's own when done.

It is also handy to do CWM backups if you become a Flashaholic like some of use here. If your new ROM sux you can easily revert back to your previous ROM then.

Kies I don't use. I installed it to check out how it sync's and stuff, did not like it and removed it. For my music and vids I use DoubleTwist. I find it is much better and works via WiFi on the paid version.

Happy flashing :)

I use drive & walk that came with the phone, also sometimes google maps, the caching works well, it covers a 10km (or is it mile) square radius on the location

Wow awesome! Thanks Mike, helpful as always :D

The main items i'm worried bout losing are my contacts and settings (pics, vids and music can be backed up manually).
I dont even use most of the apps on my phone, so i dont really care if those go.

Just to be sure, i'll sync my contacts with outlook, but i've changed so many settings on my phone i lost count.

Anytime dude :)

Contacts you can sync with Outlook, but the best way is to let them sync with your Google Account (IMO). Since I started doing it this way I have never lost anything. Get Outlook to also Sync with your Google Account. I am a Google Apps user so get automatic exchange like synch in Outlook with my GApps account, and this keeps both my phone and laptop always 100%. I think you may need a 3rd party app to sycn direct with Outlook. I have not done it this way in a looonnnggg time so not sure. Perhaps Kies will do this for you? I have not sync'd my phone direct with my computer in years. Both sync via the internet rather.

Okay, it would help if i had Outlook installed lol, so scratch that idea.

I do have sync setup for my google contacts, but i dont think the phone contacts get synced to the google servers, i might have to merge them all.

Does "Applications \ Contacts \ Menu \ Import/Export / Import From SD" Card help at all?
I am assuming here you mean your contacts are on your SIM (Phone) and you want them to sync in the Google cloud?

If you import them, then they will sync with Google automatically :)

Yep i did this now:

Menu > import/export > export to sd card
then:
Menu > import/export > import from sd card
and choose my google account instead of phone. Its now syncing it :)
Taking forever tho :/ Should've done this on wifi.

loaded 2.3.5 last night and loving it. made a small mistake and installed the WIPE version of the firmware, luckily i had a Titanum backup :-), lifesaver.

Battery usage is already showing improvement from 2.3.4

Hi all

I am currently on KH3, rooted with CF-Root. Can I flash a newer firmware (KI3 non-wipe) using CWM Manager that came with CF-Root, instead of Odin? For that matter can you flash anything else that requires 'flashing' using CWM Manager?

Should I flash the XXKI3 xeo poland or the XWKI8 nee rom. Which one is better?

Flashing from stock 2.3.3 gingerbread as kies takes forever

Has anyone taken out this phone on a Cell C contract? or have it on Cell C?, just want to double check that there are no issues before i get this,

thanks

I have... what do you mean issues?

Hi, i just wanted to make sure if there where no network issues with the phone and cell C, havnt heard anything about them, and keen to move over there for this phone and package,

I found this http://www.ps3za.co.za/forum/showthread.php?t=80897, (but i just realized the date it was posted now was before it was officially released there in SA).

Also does any1 know if USB teethering works properly on the stock Kernal/Version friend of mine told me he heard people saying it didnt work

Regards

I used tethering last week while on holiday at Shaka's Rock to play Xbox and it worked 100%. Custom ROM though. Don't see why it would not work on stock though.

Don't know if this means anything, but Tapatalk is currently free in Samsung apps (R23.44 in Android Marketplace). Asphalt 6 HD is also free currently. Just thought I should maybe give a shoutout...
