I support the above. Get rid of Kies, use Odin (PC) or Mobile Odin to flash firmware or root. Use Airdroid for the rest you wanted to do with Kies

I have Odin but it continues to fail also I cannot get download mode, What I do is press volune up & home & off button at the same time but don't see Download option :-( I bring the app CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LP2-v5.2-CWM5 into Odin and press start it returns as fail.....Could this be because I don't have ZIP??

Instructions - ODIN (long)

- Follow these instructions to the letter.

Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!

- Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip

- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer

- Start ODIN

- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar

- Put your phone in download mode (volume down + home + power)

- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer - Make sure repartition is NOT checked

- Click the START button

- Wait for the phone to reboot

- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)

I have done exactly that and returns as failed!

Restart PC. Try again. Write down your steps. Report back.

Volume up = recovery mode
Volume down = download mode

So press Vol Down + Home + Power for download mode

You don't need a paid version of Odin.

Thanks so much That was successful but now the phone is not booting up properly and is stuck on the S logo etc also just before that I get a Yellow triangle

Steps to flash new firmware and root at the same time with non-paid version of Mobile Odin (no need for PC - do everything on your SGS2)

1. Download firmware of choice (I get it from Intratech's thread on XDA)
2. Download CF-root (from Chainfire's thread on XDA)
3. Unzip both with ZArchive (get it from Play Store)
4. Make Nandroid backup either through CWM or in recovery mode!
5. Open Mobile Odin Lite
6. Click "Open File ..." and select the firmware you extracted
7. Click "Kernel" and select the CF-root file you extracted
8. Click "Flash Firmware"
9. Wait and do not interrupt!

I have done this a couple of times retained root. Use with caution. I am not responsible if your phone gets bricked.
