"Mobile Data" is UMTS or 3.x G (falling back to 2G when necessary), while GSM is 2G & 2.5G (EDGE). You can receive MMSes with GSM. The major battery drain happens when the handset flaps between 2G and 3G. In the bad old days of using a BB, if I left it on both (the default for most 'smartphones') then the battery would last maybe 2 days. If I set it to GSM only (which was my default setting as BIS was rubbish anyway) then I would get a full week.

It thus stands to reason that disabling "Mobile Data", thus forcing the phone to only use GSM, will indeed save battery power but will still allow most comms to run as required.

If I disable mobile data I get nothing (if Wi-Fi off). If I leave mobile data on but set it to 2G only then I get a max Edge connection which helps my battery.

2G is my preferred option as I only need whatsapp and email when away from Wi-Fi.

I just tested, with mobile data and Wi-Fi off voice and SMS still work but MMS doesn't. So, if you need to save battery and still want basic services then disable both at night.

Yip, that's my reason for not switching off my device altogether. Did it once and missed an emergency call. If it is an emergency they will call and not MMS or whatsapp.
 
Pretty bleak battery performance on my side. 19 hours and on 36% with normal usage. Sound normal or should I be getting more?

It's not the best, but it's not far off.

Out of interest, my wife's white S3 all of sudden started to not charge using AC charger. USB was fine.
Took it into Samsung, they are replacing the main PC board and the battery apparently. I'm glad, we sent it in with the worst performing battery out of the four we have. Hope it doesn't take too long to get it back.

Ok. I guess I will just deal with it. Charging it daily, so that is that, I am stop obsessing over battery performance! :p

Good luck with getting yours back, hopefully the issue gets resolved.

How difficult is it to plug in your charger when you go to bed?

Also, if your battery is pap after two years, buy a new one and dispose of the old one. Can't be easier.

Not difficult. Only thing I heard is that leaving it on charge for too long can over charge the battery. Yay or nay?

Out with the old battery, in with the new one.

I was also overly obsessed with battery life on my phone, until I thought, faak it, my battery is removable.

Now I just plug it in when I go to bed and stopped worrying about it.

If the battery life becomes really bad, I'll just buy a new battery. Sorted. ;)
 
I am about to just ship from HTC to Samsung and started reading up on the S3. Now I find that almost everyone is complaining about the battery life.

How does the S3 battery life compare with the One X?

I have had a HTC Desire and am using a DesireHD since its been launched. My WiFi is permanently on and I message, play, call and surf the net with my phone. Basically I use the smartphone for what its made for.

Well....GSMArena claims an endurance rating of 50 hours for the S3 with the new Jelly Bean ROM....so...um....I really don't know.

I've got one. Don't stress. If you look in more detail you will see it is a few individuals having issue with particular phones, out of the thousands sold, or others showing concern about "only" getting 19 hours use out of the device and "only" being left with 30% battery time! Hell, if most smartphone users could get anywhere near that they'd be stoked!

I work from home. My wifi is on the entire time I am at home, almost 16 hours per day. When I leave the home for appointments the phone is used as a turn by turn voice navigation GPS device. I make and receive calls throughout the day. I spend a lot of time on Whatsapp. I spend time on the forums on Tapatalk. I browse the web. I watch some YouTube videos. I play some games or the daughter does. I snap photos fairly regularly. Prior to Jelly Bean, and probably partly because it was my new baby, I'd need to plug in the phone at around 6pm as it would be running low on "gas". Now I have found I can make it to 8pm and still have juice left. Yes, it gets plugged in every night but I have had to do that with every cellphone for as long as I can remember. It is a habit of mine.
 
Thanks ClintZA that sounds reassuring. Sounds like my typical usage. I am 2 minds about the jellybean update after reading the review posted above.

What type of charger does the phone use? Mini USB like the HTC and BlackBerrys?

Would you recommend getting the phone from FNB or via Vodacom or cell c? I'm thinking more in terms of warrentee offered.

Mini-USB. The same cable plugs into a two prong for AC charging. I got mine through MTN but I was already with them and it meant an upgrade 3 months earlier than if I ported, and less hassle. Laziness won out.
 
Ok thanks. If FNB don't call me by Saturday then I'm going to get the phone from Vodacom (Cellucity) over the weekend. I guess the pebble blue one.
