Hmm. Pity about the 2G not working- what other apps don't work?

I'll try 3G only for a few days and see how that changes battery life. You reckon 3G only is better than auto mode?

That fix I linked apparently does not work consistently if it all, but I came across another fix on XDA that does appear to have worked - disable "Use wireless networks" in Settings > Location Services, and check only "Use GPS satellites" while using nav software. I drove 40+ km this morning, 50mins, and didn't lose signal.

It appears there's a bug introduced into aGPS in this test version 4.1.2. So that's a temporary fix, but hopefully another test leak or official release will resolve this soon.

For those who flashed JB 4.1.2 (i.e. based on the leaked test ROM), and still looking for a permanent GPS issue fix:
- If you are using Omega (v33.1 or v33.2), you can directly flash the zip at this link using shaarky's fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2004569
- If you are using a different ROM that is 4.1.2 based (and they haven't releases a flashable zip), you will need to manually replace 5 GPS related files using the method in this post from Tarzan11: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34469212&postcount=8807.

As always, you should do a nandroid backup before, just in case you need to roll back. If you are not on Omega ROM, I would suggest that you download the Omega GPS fix zip file from the 1st link anyway (shaarky's fix), and manually extract the required 5 GPS files from within the "system" subfolders. Then follow the manual file replacement steps in the 2nd link (Tarzan11's method).

The reason is that the only file that differs in terms of content is the gps.conf file - the settings in shaarky's gps.conf file are the default settings that were in previous GS3 ROM versions (most notably the settings for NTP server and aGPS data locations on the internet). The server region is North America in Tarzan11's gps.conf file, and this may not be all that optimal for use here in SA (if it will work at all, I'm not actually sure).

Additional, if you really want to: you can manually go and change the settings in the gps.conf file to be those of the Africa region server. This info is contained in the gps.conf file in the Africa.V1.2.zip file you can find at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953630. The intent with these steps is to get a faster GPS signal location fix. Although during my initial testing of a GPS issue fix, I did manually update my gps.conf file with the Africa region settings and successfully get a GPS fix, my testing here was limited and I cannot conclusively say it was faster (or not) than getting a GPS fix using the generic gps.conf file settings. I last used the fix from Shaarky, tested using Google Navigation on the way to work this morning (Pta to Midrand), was happy enough with the time to get a GPS location fix, and the GPS signal was maintained without issue all the way (about 35 minutes drive).
 
For the official Jelly Bean, if I go the ODIn route instead of Kies, will I need to root my phone? As far as I understand with Kies everything is automatic, but with ODIN you need some tech knowledge?
 
ODIN is dead simple and yes it automatically reboots the phone after the update

I m on 4.1.2 dont even have to worry about official SAn rom(s). I always want to be up to date with the latest rom(s).
 
I saw on XDA forums that if you load an official ROM with ODIN, and a OTA get pushed out you will not be able to install the OTA.

Not true

If you flash an OFFICIAL STOCK Rom with Odin, you will still get OTA. If you flah a leak or unofficial Rom then no OTA

Yip, havent really started using this feature but im sure it will come in handy.
 
I can see the multi-wondow being useful if you're copying stuff and annotating from another document or the like, but what other real practical uses are there for multi-window?

Hold down "back" button, you will get a tag on the left of the screen then expand it. Just drag any of the apps in the list into the open space to the right and add another below or above it, as you did the first. easy... chop chop.. on the fly
