Samsung Galaxy S3

Vanilla has always referred to the Nexus firmware as far as I'm aware. I'm currently running Omega, but I would consider a vanilla ROM.
Dont see why, Omega looks and feels nothing like AOSP/Nexus. It's a Samsung based ROM (albeit one of the most modified) using the TouchWiz interface and Samsung's proprietary app suite (again different from Google's).

I didn't say I considered Omega a vanilla ROM, I said I'm running Omega but would consider a vanilla ROM.

Oh Ok, misunderstood.

Looks like going forward with the S4, you might not have that much choice. Reading xda, seems the AOSP situation with Samsung is going downhill. For example the CM team have abandoned support for the S4, sighting Samsung's lack of dev support.

I'm on the latest CM10.1 and the last I heard, the camera issue was an Android one and CM crew were unlikely to ever get it fixed. Evidently things are very different with Cm10.1 on the S3 as the pics really are atrocious. Just check my gallery for the last few snaps I took of some food - the pics are awful and they were the best of the lot, while half of them froze the camera and gallery. It is rather pathetic...

The blame for that lies entirely with Samsung for not releasing the source code what not that has to do with the camera. The CM guys can only do the best they can with what they've got.

I don't care much for CM, but I do hope Indie and co. don't also ditch their projects for future Samsung devices.

I downloaded SuperNexus and the Google apps sdk, but now I see comments from users having issues with it, most notably with wifi and battery life. I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble - I need wifi working hundreds.

Well if Samsung doesn't start making decent AOSP driver code available to the indies, its likely all the vanilla Google based ROMs will go the same way e.g. Slim, Carbon, Paranoid, SuperNexus etc.

All you'll be left with is the Samsung Android based ROMs e.g. Neat, Omega, Wanam etc. That's assuming Samsung don't clamp down on source code in this area as well.

Few devs on xda have totally vowed against the support of custom roms on Samsungs chips exynos so there are already a few great devs being lost there, sad but that's the way Samsung treats the devs

:banghead:

Have you used any of those vanilla ROM's? I've given up on SuperNexus - hectic issues being commonly reported in the xda thread. I checked out Slim Bean, Carbon and Paranoid Android briefly but there's not a lot to distinguish them by. I think Carbon was the one that had virtual navigation buttons (at least in its preview), ruling it out completely.

Yep, most but on an S2 not S3.

CM10.1 nightlies is my ROM of choice as I like the regular updates/fixes, however dont think the S2 suffers from an iffy driver situation like the S3. Samsung was still playing nice when the S2 was their flagship phone.

Just upgraded from a Motorola Defy (RBM) to the S3. I've been using CM10 on my Defy and have been very satisfied, sad to see CM10 and the S3 are not as happy together. I've been advised to load Android Revolution HD from this thread, anyone using have any comments about it?

Hi guys

I got myself an S3 awhile back and it really takes some getting used to. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a tiny problem im having. I cant seem to download from the google play store. When I try to download something a bar pops up and says downloading but nothing downloads.

I've tried clearing the cache and a few other solutions I read online but nothing seems to work.

Thanks in advance

Clear all data for anything play related AND download manager.

Group play is pretty cool on the latest rom. (You will need multiple sammys on the latest leak to try - there are 3 in the office).

Ok now this thing is getting out of hand. Drops 50% battery life overnight if not left on the charger. I've tried replacing the battery as well. Nothing. I'm getting by with 2 batteries, a car charger, etc

Have you installed Better Battery Stats on your phone? Will be able to pinpoint what is keeping your processor awake...
