Samsung Galaxy S3

firstly went into app settings and erased data and cache for exchange. then removed account.

Problem found in point 1 - went into data usage, into exchange and the restrict background data icon to wifi was ticked when i scrolled down...argghhh. unchecked and restarted device.
Setup account again and all works.
So basically had to check that sync and data usage blocking was off in both the app settings as well as global settings...
One happy wife = priceless :)

I updated to 4.1.1 previously using Kies. I've just updated now to 4.1.2 OTA. After downloading, I was prompted to "Cancel", "Install all" or "Install".

Selecting "Install all" prompted me about downloading other stuff and wanted to schedule something for tomorrow. I canceled that an just took the "Install" option. What is "Install all" all about?

The SD card isn't really an issue for me, I haven't really used more than 16 gigs in anycase, but you never know when your demands are going to be higher.

I really like the new look touchwiz, for most part it still looks the same - but atleast this time you can see that it is not a blatant copy of iOS (except maybe the S Voice part).

The eye following this is in my opinion the only thing that other phones don't have, so I hope that it is a success.

I also would have liked FM transmission, but I don't think android supports that.

S Voice Sucks ass just use Google now. Miles ahead of Siri.

Generally nothing significant, just a steady stream of fixes & minor improvements. For instance the last notable one (a week ago) was incorporating the superuser authorisation function into the system menu (instead of it being a separate app).

I just wish the camera would work properly. The quality is atrocious and the flash problem really pisses me off. CM10.1 has the worst camera of any ROM I've used...

Dont have issues on my side, S2 not S3 though & not heavy camera user, but it is continually changing. Over time I've seen minor tweaks e.g. camera startup time.

The flash freezes the gallery half the time and takes a blank picture. The quality in comparison to stock is notably worse though on the S3...

Dont get any nonsense like that on my S2, but then again I do keep up to date on almost a daily basis e.g. running CM10.1-20130317 now. Thats the beauty on CM, whatever issues you may have picked up say a month ago, may no longer be present now, having been fixed.

Dont have an S3, but did some test shot on my S2 & iPhone5. The iPhone produces slightly richer colour tones, however both 8MP shooters are decent enough for my amateur eye.

I'm on the latest CM10.1 and the last I heard, the camera issue was an Android one and CM crew were unlikely to ever get it fixed. Evidently things are very different with Cm10.1 on the S3 as the pics really are atrocious. Just check my gallery for the last few snaps I took of some food - the pics are awful and they were the best of the lot, while half of them froze the camera and gallery. It is rather pathetic...

So does this issue affect all non-Samsung based AOSP ROMs on the S3?

I assume all their camera code is based on the same base Google source?

Its quite simple, on Samsung phones there are two main code streams, that being Samsung based (TouchWiz etc.) or Google AOSP (Android Open Source Project), pretty much Nexus Android.

CM is AOSP that's why its been based JB 4.2.2 for some time even though Samsung have only recently progressed past JB 4.1.2.

Hence my question regarding the camera code, Samsung vs AOSP.

EDIT: Found the answer on xda, yes camera code is an issue on the S3 due to Samsung not playing ball.

I suppose, but depends what is meant by vanilla.

On Samsung phones its only the source thats vanilla, the final custom ROM binaries all have some customisation/augmentation, its just the degree that varies. If vanilla means the Nexus phone experience, then there are ROMs that aim to faithfully replicate this without any additions, like SuperNexus 2.0.

Vanilla has always referred to the Nexus firmware as far as I'm aware. I'm currently running Omega, but I would consider a vanilla ROM. I use Nova Launcher Prime, so the only real practical difference would be more available RAM.
