IMO CM is the worst ROM out there...They don't optimize it for the device as much as other developers do...I prefer Slimkat or Carbon ROM over it. CM must start making their more customisable as well, I mean what's the point of a 'custom' ROM if you can't customise it as much as you want to...And other developers add more features :)

Just my 2 cents...

Thanks for the heads up, flashed Slimkat last night and I foresee it being on the phone for the foreseeable future. It's slick, light, efficient, heavily customisable. Also the higher dpi the Rom comes with by default makes excellent use of the screen. I know you can set this on other Roms but Slimkat does it fantastically.

Coming from Pacman Rom, had to change as my phone would randomly reboot about twice a day.

The software update that the Samsung Store does, does that update the S3 to 4.3?

I called the Canal Walk branch but the guy wasn't there, he only works 9-5pm :(

edit: Nevermind, seems it's available now on Vodacom :D

I just received the update. Does anyone have the problems that have been plagued by 4.3?

Well, you run a Windows application that does the actual downloading and installing.
After the windows app runs I get this screen which tells me to go back to the same site.

CM installer Exit.jpg

So now, stuck in a loop if I keep following the instructions.

What am I missing??

Hmm, odd. After I ran it the installer updated itself.

Seems these guys had the same problem:

Try doing what was suggested, i.e. clear caches, restart, try again.

Thanks, will try again at some point in the not too distant future. Vodacom just updated me to 4.3 so I want to play around with it a bit.

I guess all the guys here will say ditch the network specific bloat-ware android and go custom ROM?

Now why am I still stuck on 4.1.2? :(

Because you're not running custom firmware or refuse to download the latest crappy stock firmware from sammobile.com.

It is stock 4.1.2 I'm running. I prefer the OTA updates, because that way I don't have to reformat the entire phone. I recall there being some status or information setting I can check somewhere about the status of my firmware. Can anyone tell me where it is and what it's supposed to be when it's completely stock?

OTA updates are a joke, and backing up and restoring your stuff is a breeze. You'll have to accept your old firmware if you can't be bothered to sort it out.

I accept the old firmware, not really TOO bothered, but I will probably have to manually upgrade at some stage. Just out of curiosity, why are OTA updates a joke?

Because they're about a year behind the times, and are bloated up Samsung junk.

Checking for an OTA update will be slightly different for you as you are on 4.1.2. but on 4.3. it is under: More > About device > Software update

It was pretty easy restoring/reinstalling my apps and stuff after my factory reset, the only snag was setting up my Google account at startup as i have 2 step verification on and needed to receive SMSes in order to login on my "new" 4.3 device. I could not check the SMS they were sending me as it would not let me leave the Google account setup screen. I had to cancel and setup later on once the device had configured itself to a more stable state.

After going through the above, I'll feel less nervous about going to a custom ROM. Knowing that apps etc... is easy enough to re-install.

P.S. I think factory reset / format is recommended for improving performance, so I took the plunge.

Made the switch to CM 11 Nightly (2014 04 18) from 10.2 Stable, and I'm very impressed.

I was skeptical to go with a Nightly since I had a bad experience on my S2 back in the day with a nightly DarkyROM, but I have yet to run into any issues with this one.

They've ironed out the one or two bugs that were in 10.2, as well as giving it some fresh interface tweaks. It's also more fluid and loving 4.4.

All round happy camper over here.

This rom is giving me issues. About once or twice a day the phone becomes completely unresponsive for a few minutes and then suddenly comes to life.

I know exactly where to check for an update, but it tells me that my software is already updated.
