Flashed GApps again and that fixed that.

Everything is working now except for my mobile network. It does not connect to MTN or takes very very long before registering on the network.

EDIT: when it does eventually register and get a signal on MTN it also goes no higher than Edge. And I always have 3G or higher at home. 2G option is not selected in the network settings.

Sounds like it could be your modedm. There is a list of modems. Check out your current one and try different ones to see which one works for you. I have had it that I wasn't able to hear anything during phone calls.

Not sure if this is your problem but if you have wiped cache and dalvik and fixed permissions and problem persists it worth giving another modem a shot. I think I have the MB5 modem.

I'd never even considered this. Thanks for the heads up. I don't see any mention of 4.2.2 in the list in that thread. Checked my settings and I'm running MB5 too. I'll leave it be - my phone performs just fine on the network. I can deal with selecting my operator now and again.

Will see if it bothers me that much. Otherwise I will switch back to CM10.1 Nightly Builds.

Not much really.

Few settings here and there. Omega does seem to allow for a lot more advanced tweaks. Or that is how I find it.

Honestly cannot say that one is smoother or faster than the other.

Battery life is pretty much the same for me.

I did find that restoring app data via MyBackup Free was not successful. It corrupted the apps I did restore data to and I had to reinstall all those apps.

To be completely honest. Setting up and installation of CM went a lot smoother for me personally than Omega did. Personal experience of course.

Weird that the backups didn't work. I doubt that the Pro version behaves differently at its core. Try ROM Toolbox Pro for your backups? It's a must-have root app anyway.

Perhaps you could also try Titanium Backup (that is what I use). I also saw an app called carbon backup I think which might be worth looking at.

I have been using Titanium Backup for years now to backup my apps and never encountered any problems when restoring. One should just keep in mind that system apps should not be restored because then you can run into problems.

I also use Titanium Backup to restore my Gmail accounts, Bluetooth pairings, WiFi settings, Wallpapers & Bookmarks. A nice feature of Titanium Backup is where you can make a zip file of all your installed apps with data which can then be flashed from recovery right after a new rom. It makes restoring apps less time consuming.
 
Should I root or not?

Background: Haven't rooted because I was scared of stuffing my phone. I've only bought Tapatalk and SwiftKey3, I'm not a big buyer.
 
You have to ask yourself what do you want to root for?

Do you want to do a custom rom? Titanium backup? Custom kernels?

There is no 'best' ROM. If you like TouchWiz, my recommendation is Omega. If you want a more vanilla experience, my recommendation is Omega AOKP. Cyanogenmod is another popular vanilla-based ROM. Hit up the S3 section of XDA Developers for instructions and download links. You'll need to root your phone and install ClockWorkManager before installing a custom ROM. XDA can sort you out with that too.

You can restore your apps. If you root your device and stay on stock for a few minutes, any popular backup app can backup your apps and the app data.

I highly recommend that you buy ROM Toolbox Pro. It's currently 40% off. It can backup your apps and free up huge amounts of RAM, along with the million other features listed in its description.
 
I am back on CM10.1 since yesterday morning.

I personally find it suiting me better. And the time it took to connect to the mobile network was frustrating for me. And maybe I am imagining it but battery life seems a tad better for me on CM than Omega.

Give it time. There are little annoyances that creep in. Waiting for dual boot to be supported
 
I need to insure my wife's S3.
Anyone know what the ave. replacement cost of a i9305 Galaxy SIII LTE is?
 
Is it possible to force my S3 to use the Vodacom network?

Or will it only switch from Cell C to Vodacom when there is absolutely zero Cell C reception?

Reason I'm asking is because I know Cell C reception at a packed Loftus is not ideal. Would like to force Vodacom for the game on Saturday.

You just went to settings - - > mobile network - - > search networks... And then selected Vodacom from the list??

Because when I do that it says my sim is not allowed to register on the network.

Yes it gave the same message the fist time around, second time and third it when through and I had the "R" (roaming) icon at the top.

Tried again now (different location) and it does not want to now :/ Perhaps this only works on certain towers/locations.
