Samsung i900 Omnia

What made you not go with the iPhone?

I can't talk for anybody else, but after reading all the reviews at GSMArena, as well as several other websites, it just seems as if the Omnia has a clear edge when it comes to features, etc. It has a MUCH better camera, can record video, can send MMS messages, and supports proper Bluetooth usage.

In addition it equals the iPod in terms of touch screen, storage, push email and so on - even though its screen is slightly lower in resolution.

Personally I think the iPhone has gotten ahead of its own hype. It is SO much hot air, that people are being blinded. If you look at the stats, the Omnia has the iPhone beaten fair and square. But then again, many people won't care about the stats - they just want the damned iPhone so bad, they wouldn't care if it couldn't phone either!

What made you not go with the iPhone?

1 - more expensive
2 - never considered it (I am familiar with WM6)
3 - I like Samsung phones (currently have G800)
4 - comes pre-installed with Garmin GPS software AFAIK

Oh I see I thought you were considering it...

I was also considering this phone as the features are really nice and I do like Windows Mobile. BUT... some of the reviews I read said that the interface was clumsy, and I had been wanting the iPhone for a very long time.

I might have considered it for a brief point in time, but then I came to my senses...

thinking of getting one but not certain as yet. waiting to hear what complaints people have.

I've had an iPod touch (jailbroken) for the past few months. So I'm familiar with the iPhone OSX UI and was thinking that I'd ditch my iPod and get the iPhone when my crappy CellC (with Nokia N80) contract expires. Then came the doubts...the thought of spending R7K and getting sub standard features (compared to the Touch Pro, Omnia etc.)

So after wasting precious hours at work and reading almost all the reviews and comments on sites I decided that if I was going to move to a windows mobile device, the Omnia's my best bet. I've had a fair amount of experience with windows mobile in the good 'ol PDA days, so I was was sure move to the Omnia and enjoy the superior features on the phone, right? WRONG.

I finally got to test one of these phones yesterday, and what a godawful experience it was! Yes, granted I only tested it for a few minutes, but it just doesn't matter. The problem with this thing (and almost all these "next gen" WinMO smartphones) is simply that they've chucked a PDA OS on a phone .. and now expect you to somehow navigate "preferrably" without the stylus. I know there's a larger icon UI chucked over WinMO to make thumb navigation possible, but I wouldn't want to be caught dead using that half assed clown-color-inspired little interface. Yes, I know, you're probably thinking of flaming comments to throw my way, things like "you obviously don't know WinMO", "You're just not a power user" etc. etc.
I can assure you, I know my way around my devices and always try to stay objective when testing one, and always try to find workarounds to make the device suite my lifestyle. The problem here is, even if I could tweak WinMO to somehow work better, I can just imagine how irritating that finicky little UI will be to use after the original "wow" factor on the Omnia disappears. And what's worse is the fact that the touchsreen is simply too unresponsive, I've read about other users complaining about this, but never dreamed it would be this bad. Now and then I kept pressing items on the menu with no response, not knowing whether windows was lagging or whether there were too many tasks running, several times it turned out that the screen simply wasn't picking up my thumb presses and pushing any harder felt incredibly akward.

Seriously, I don't care about the iPhone hype and the fact that it has generated a whole community of mouth foaming anti-apple crusaders that spend so much time trying to find faults on the device. I know there are happy WinMO users out there, and I know that the Omnia has some really great features (read:specs) that I would have loved to see on the iPhone, but to somehow state that the Omnia is superior only means one of several things:
1. Either the iPhone has some critical feature missing you cannot live without (Which in most cases I doubt, unless your girlfriend lives in Siberia and MMS porn is the only action you get)
2. You've never actually USED an iPhone and compared it to the Omnia
3. You can't buy an iPhone (for whatever reason) and you're now looking for justifications as to why the Omnia is somehow superior (which in some aspects it is, but overall it's a terrible experience to get to the superior functionalities).
4. You really truly think the Omnia is superior and don't mind spending hours on end trying to get used to it and customizing the UI and applications (in which case ignore my rant, years of tinkering with gadgets and trying to get them to look and work "cool" has burnt out my geek-side and I am now part of the group of people who prefer ease of use and practicality above a fake smoke screen of IT gadget twiddling superiority with strangers and my peers)
5. Your never ending search for individualism has led you to believe that it's cool to hate popular devices just because everyone else loves them and somehow they're just "stupid, uninformed or petty"...even to the extent that you try to defend software from companies like Microsoft whose had many years and almost infinite resources to design a Mobile OS with a UI that could easily trump the iPhone. No to mention the fact that this is (technically) Apple's first attempt at a phone, and already ALL of the other cellphone manufactures are clambering to keep up to regain or sustain market share.

I can just see myself on this thing, changing registry settings, adding apps to bridge the WinMO shortfalls etc. and then loading new ROM's that are supposed to be "better", only to have to redo all the customizations I made....*eish*

For those of us that enjoy a phone with AWESOME mobile browsing, multimedia features that truly stand out and create an attachment between you and your multimedia, and the easiest way of adding apps, music, games etc. Bite the dust and get an iPhone. For those "power users" out there that claim it's a great device, great, I'm glad some folks out there can get this thing to work brilliantly, just remember that most people don't want to play with their devices for weeks to get used to it, only to find out that functionality has been compromised to make way for superior features that constitute about +-10% of the average use of the device.

P.S. and as for Apple locking down on the iPhone apps, I don't give a rats ass what they do to the app. store. At least they monitor it so that not every Tom Dick and Sally can put their crappy app. on there and screw up thousands of user experiences on the device. Even if every app. was forced to put on an icon of Steve Jobs' hairy ass, I'd still get some free useful apps and would still rather pay money for decent applications and developers who deserve it.

so, in a nutshell, windows lives up to its crappy UI....and pain in the ass gimicks...omnia off the list then.

i guess it really comes down to BB and iPhone then. In my opinion, these are really the only 2 real competitors

dudleygb : If you're OK with WinMO, you'll probably love this device and I'd still recommend you to try it out. Personally, a few years ago I'd KILL to get my hands on something like this, but after you've experienced a decent UI the novelty of all the extra features manufacturers throw at us seems less and less impressive (except a decent GPS with Garmin, which really is cool :).
MS has been focusing on adding more and more features on WinMO, but left the UI wanting. So there's no doubt that WinMO impresses with its features and potential for modification. I don't want to p1ss on the Omnia, but the fact is that from what I could gather they're actually targeting the iPhone crowd with this. I just wish that manufacturers would start realizing that if they're going to design something that actually does beat their rivals and silences the iPhone madness, they have to first design a UI experience that improves on or at least equals OSX, and then pack those extra hardware features on top. Instead they dump more and more devices onto the market, each with minimal changes to WinMO (and not a hint of a new OS, at least G1 is a step in the right direction) and all the hardware they can throw at it.

(Forgive me for just comparing the iPhone and the Omnia, I have had no experience with a BB device thus far, so any comparisons I could make would just be based on hearsay)

Let me get this right Raptor... you have never used an iPhone yourself, but have an iPod touch, and have played with the Omnia for a few minutes and yet you are so strong about how great the iPhone is? Sorry but that does scream fan boy.

Yes, you can knock the Omnia based on your few minutes (hell I decided against it based on a few minutes on the Samsung F480) but what is your defence of the iPhone based on?

Oh, and another thing. PLEASE : Samsung, Nokia etc. When you design new Smartphones decide whether the device will be fully finger happy or whether it should be stylus driven, and STICK TO IT! Look, options are great, but stability and consistency are better, it's less frustrating and doesn't confuse and discourage new adopters...

Fanboy : "someone (not just boys) who is obsessed with something to the point of abandoning all logic and common sense when talking about the thing they are obsessed with."

"Pronunciation:
\ˈfan-ˌbȯi\
Function:
noun
Date:
1919
: a boy who is an enthusiastic devotee (as of comics or movies)"

No, dude...no fanboy here. Just common objective sense and some subjective remarks based on my own experience and feelings towards the subject in the hope of relating to those who are constantly swayed and confused by remarks from others and the need to to attain the best value for money when buying products that we carry around almost 24/7.

But am I correct that you have not owned the iPhone and used the Omnia for a few minutes? Possibly after using the iPhone for a few minutes you may be equally disillusioned.... I'm just providing an objective view of these posts...

Yes of course, you're right. There's always a chance that my experience might change when I actually own the iPhone (and I'll update my posts/rants accordingly if that ever happens). But the probability of that happening is very slim, as you know the iPod Touch has exactly the same OS minus the phone functionality. I've tried to cover my missing iPhone/iPod functionality by working on the iPhone at a Vodashop, and watching loads of youtube clips showing it (instead of just reading about it).
You'll notice my rant is mostly directed to how crappy navigating was for me on the Omnia. For me, this was unforgivable and a total deal breaker (not to mention dissapointing, it really is a LOT cheaper and having that Garmin GPS would be great). For some it might be more bearable and justify playing around with the other features some more. Which is why I still recommend trying it out for yourself.

I've used both the iPhone (non-3G), iPod Touch and HTC Diamond, the iPhone's keyboard, UI and response speed wins every time... And the HTC has a 3D chips, so I don't have much hope for the Omnia!!!

I read Raptor's little review (attack) of the Omnia (what a waste of my time)...and somehow I still want the Omnia...I'm getting it tomorrow. There are more good reviews than bad ones regarding the Omnia...to be honest I couldn't find any bad reviews except this poor South African having a go at one. When comparing it to the HTC Touch Diamond...they couldn't even say which one is better. The iPhone is a glorified iPod touch you can phone with...end of story. It looks nice and have a really awesome UI...but that's it. Omnia ftw! :P

Is it possible to sync the Omnia with iTunes? (I've already got my playlists setup there :/)
