SAOL cancel uncapped packages

Wow, this is disappointing! I recently wrote to SAOL at the end of March asking whether they were going to release any 4Mb uncapped packages similar to MWeb, and I received a reply saying that SAOL were going to release NEW uncapped packages in the first week of April, which were going to beat MWeb's offerings. So I waited and waited, and nothing has happened so far. I was going to wait till the end of April.

My friend call them ASOL

Funniest thing I read in a while, nailed it I would say.

Guys, I let them new that I am cancelling and asked them to revert my line back to Telkom, which they told me will take between 7 to 10 days, no cost or interruption to me...

Looking at Openweb with their Gold add-on, total deal comes to R470, not unshapped, but semi shapped. Also thinking of Sainet or maybe Mweb...

This is what i find so bizarre.
How do we go from uncapped and more to come, to a sudden cease of uncapped....

Holy crapweasel. I'm so very glad I didn't sign up with these guys when they started offering. It's crazy that they appear to be dumping anyone over 30GB.

I think the phrases "pull an SAOL" and "do it the Afrihost way" should be immortalised for how to piss off customers.

Don't forget the immortal "it's unsustainable" and "it's imminent"

If an ISP just resells the IS Uncapped Basic product then there is no chance that the ISP will be losing money based on your usage right?

I mean that is Internet Soultions choice?

Well this is unfortunate, to put it mildly. Looks like I'll be moving my line back to Telkom then, and maybe signing up for a data-only business account with MWeb. At R651 their uncapped, unshaped offering is as close to what I had with SAOL as I can get. Too bad it's on a contract, but that's the way it is I guess. Still keeping my options open and looking around... but I'll be damned if I'm ever going to hand my line over to an ISP again. No sir!

Oh, I also just wanted to mention that I have had nothing but excellent service since I joined SAOL, to now turn around and start slagging them off after feeding at the trough of cheap bandwidth would be a tad hypocritical and just a bit immature. I'm sad that it turned out this way but business is cut-throat and if you can't compete you have to make changes. SAOL provided (most) of us with a good service till now, so don't judge them too harshly.

Good luck to you guys who try and transfer your line back to Telkom, I moved house and asked Telkom to cancel my telephone line as new tenants were moving into the property. They could not cancel the line as SAOL still held the ADSL portion (takes 30 days to clear). In the end it took many phone calls and over 40 days to cancel my telephone line. After this experience I will NEVER give my ADSL line to any ISP!!

I thought I was the only one suffering. I ordered SAOL to cancel my ADSL on 1 March 2010. It is still active and I cannot cancel my Telkom line rental. Telkom has now also billed me for another month, since the cannot cancel my line because they cannot cancel my ADSL. :(

Anyone else want to pick a fight with me about why I am moving to Perth in 2 weeks? Say no more...

in fact, there is no ISP that will be able to sustain this for very long, not as long as you are forced to pay per gig.

And everyone at WA said . . .

In all honesty, this approach is FAR better than what Afrihost did to its clients. Still gonna hurt though.

I use SAOL 384k uncapped as well. I can only have about 30K per second. in theory I can have 6G a day, but I only can reach 2G a day

The full chart of usage for all speeds.

Let's not forget that SAOL was Uber when there prices were low and their service excellent.

I say that they still have excellent service, price ..... not an issue for now.

That being said, I haven't had a call or e-mail; does this mean I am unaffected? Or will I get a surprise the next time I'm billed?

Thanks
RB

I havent heard anything from them, so I emailed them to find out what was going on. Apparently if you havent been contacted you'll be fine. For how long they didnt say, but I'd think that if you havent gotten any email/call by 1 May you're in the clear for May at the very least.

I will still support SAOL. 30GB, Unshaped, good reliable service, constant full speed.
I do want to fight for a 512kB line speed at this price and service level though.
Been with DigiChilli, and am weary about moving to another cheap uncapped option.
SAOL has been heaven.
30GB, for my application, is uncapped.

Ditto mate, i asked for the same thing too.
After really thinking hard on this one, i have decided to stay with SAOL until Telkom make their imminent announcement regarding line speed changes.
I have looked at the other options and am not prepared to spend more then R500 a month on internet.
Besides that i could save with Mweb and even go with 512kbp/s, but i do not want to deal with their shaping or go with the business contact and sign my life away at the dawn of the essay cable's switch on.
And a jump from SAOL now would mean me signing with another ISP only for 2 months or so until the big bang from competition arrives anyways.
I could even have had a 4mb line and buy a few gigs a month, but its not near what i have now.
Maybe my decision was partly due to being on Vodascums 2gb R390 deal for 4 years....
I have more now then i have ever had in the last 2 months.
It still doesn't mean im happy about the abolishment of uncapped though....

No, 30GB is 30GB capped. Let's call a spade a spade, there has been enough damage done in the ISP area with loosely using the term uncapped.

30GB capped/unshaped explains the product much better and we all know what to expect ;)

Just read the MWEB thread.
The guys are getting 2kB on 4Meg line with torrents currently.
Here I can still download @38kB/s with SAOL.
The Seacom cable repair has not affected this account.
I will only move if there is a comparable UNSHAPED offering.
