Hi guys.
I used to have a 384kbps uncapped unshaped account with SAOL.
The account was R500 ADSL line rental included.
SAOL.COM phoned me today to cancel the package,
saying that clients leaving to mweb have made the uncapped package they offer to be no long viable and I was politely told to either only use 30 gig a month or take a hike.

Below is the email i got from them following the phonecall:

Subject: Saol Uncapped
Importance: High

We regret to inform you that your average usage is more than double the average of all other users on the same service, it is considered abusive and we reserve the right to terminate the account or move you onto a more appropriate package. This is degrading the service for everyone and thus in violation of our terms of service.

We can offer the following:

1. You can go onto a business package at R2300 per month all inclusive.

2. A line only account with a free 1Gb cap for debugging purposes at R139, which is still much cheaper than having the line rental with Telkom, you can then source an uncapped service from another ISP. The reason we give you a free gig is that when you have a problem, you can use the free gig to determine whether the line is down or not, by using the free account we provide.
If both accounts do not work, phone us and we will log a line fault for you.

3. We can give you a 30Gig account at the same price that you are currently paying. Top ups will cost you R29 per gig.

If we do not hear from you by Monday the 26/04/2010, your account will revert to option 2 at the end of this month.

80 Gig.
Just like every other downloader who wants a uncapped package , I wanted uncapped as i wanted to actualy use the freedom it provides.
If i wanted a 10 gig account id buy one.
I want to download and not worry about how much Ive used.
Yes , this is alot of traffic , a company shouldnt tell people , here , were selling uncapped accounts with no limitations and then go oh dang you actualy want to download stuff ..

gg

Take your business elsewhere, kerbyross, if they cannot handle one user downloading a pathetic 80 GB a month on an "uncapped" package you'll be better off finding another (better) ISP.

Well it is their right to cancel the service, people are obviously moving more than they expected and they will reduce the overall by "firing" the top guys month by month. IMHO just move to MWeb they dont care about consumption

It again raises the question of the viability of uncapped packages. I want it as much as everyone else and want the freedom. The question is if it makes business sense for the ISP's? They can only do so much as they have to purchase the bandwidth from Telkom. They can't sell anything for less than what you buy it for and still have a sustainable business.

This is the k@kest ISP I ever used. I cancelled my service a few years back. they still took money from my account. Its been about 4 years despite many calls at the time and promises to refund I still have not seen a cent. If it wasnt such a small amount I would have taken action.

very good to share these things here, helps us make a better decision before we move :-)

Most of my friends all went through Imagine, no one has reported any line degradation or warning letters. And some have exceeded 80gb on a 384.

Im signing a 4meg deal next week with them. Oh and best of all its MONTH-TO-MONTH so no 12month Mweb contract madness :-)

Cheers

But this is where the problem is. These ISPs still buy GB and resell (hoping/foring users to use less than 30gb), while mweb is buying gb/s and working on a new model.

....yet!!!!

Also it seems they are really throttling p2p, torrent and news server speeds so unless you do a crap load of browsing you are hardly ever going to do hundreds of gigs.

12 month mweb contract?

Are you high on some drug?

LOL odd that people are pulling 200-300gb already and the month is not yet finished. People that make uninformed posts are just lame, have you read the mweb usage thread or are you just another non mweb user who knows everything about their service without having used it?

How long have been with mweb lance?

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ou-downloaded-on-MWEB-UNCAPPED-so-far./page12 totally different from what you say but then you would know having used mweb right?

There is no 12 month mweb contract on thier accounts except for the business ones.

These seem worse to me:

Examples of use, which may result in excessive data transfer, include, but are not limited to:

Activity:Downloading large files or large quantities of files Usage Behaviour: Downloading files such as movies, MP3s, games and software using software such as Napster, Kazaa, E-donkey etc. How to minimise this type of usage: Refrain from using automated download programs. You may not install automated search and retrieve programs or similar automated and manual routines, which generate excessive amounts of network traffic

Activity: On-Line Gaming
Usage Behaviour:
On-line gaming can average data transfer of between 10 - 60 Mb per hour.
How to minimise this type of usage:
Limit the usage of data transfer when playing games on line. Alternatively use local gaming sites

Activity: Mail / News Groups / CHAT
Usage Behaviour:
e-Mail, Newsgroups and Chat clients are used to communicate online, however when files with suffix of "avi", "jpeg", "mpeg", "gif", etc are sent to customers they can contain very large amounts of data.
How to minimise this type of usage:
Be careful when subscribing to sites, which automatically send information with large attachments. Be aware of “background download” programs.

Limit my gaming :wtf: Exactly how backwards are you?

They may never. The thing is that most users pump their connection hard the first month, do less pumping the second and by 3-4 months down the line they're using 20-30GBs. If MWEB is on a flat rate model (they're not paying per GB) and they can shape their network during the busy periods to limit abuse they can get away with it and make a profit. That's what's happening overseas and at faster line speeds -10 to 100Mb/sec. On the other hand smaller ISPs, well they still pay per GB and they rely on contention ratios more than MWEB.

PeterCH has a very good point here, probably MWEB is on a flat rate model just like many other Tenet connected universities.

Interesting.....

47gb on a 4 meg line.
Let's be kind and double that. That is 94Gb. Short of 200-300Gb but a number I'd be perfectly satisfied with. The problem is the OP was referring to a 384k service that he has. I am seeing a number of Mweb posts referring to speeds of 9K and less on the protocols I mentioned. Please feel free to point out the ones that show these protocols running at full speed on a 384k services seeing as though you are so much better informed than me.

How many gb's you got this month? What speeds are you getting on news servers and p2p?

Lance i did 95gb last month in 14 days, this month i have not found anything i want to download go read the thread i pointed you 2 and find the 200-300gb users. I don't have the need for 200-300 gb but i could easily do it if i wanted to.

Http speeds are great 24/7. As for +20gb, Im on +40gb already.

Edit: You can pull 3-3.5gb a day on 384k Mweb if you know what youre doing.

And lets not discuss download methods in public. People go on about news servers right in the ISP reps faces then they are shocked when they get shaped.

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ou-downloaded-on-MWEB-UNCAPPED-so-far./page10

Go have a read lance and then come tell me people are not pulling 200-300gb in 22 days.
