Submitted on the 1st. Still no refund.

According to SARS - I have undeclared rental income. I phoned the call center to try and get some clarity. According to them, the money my SO pays into my account every month to help pay rent/internet etc is now seen as rental income.

Surely this cannot be ?

Getting desperate they are. Eventually selling crap on Carbonite is also going to be flagged... Jissus..

I wouldn't call it rent when speaking to them - its her contribution to living expenses (groceries, etc)

My colleague owes SARS R5k apparently. He changed jobs last year in July, and only got a few hundred rand more per month.

He disputed, but they claim it was due to a new tax bracket. Is this possible? It is really frustrating for him since he doesn't have R5k to just give away to SARS.

Even if he moves up a bracket, not his entire salary would be subject to the new %, only the amount above the previous bracket. Here are the Rates of Tax for Individuals from SARS. He should use it to work out what his tax should be and then bring it up with SARS.

He's already done that, hence the dispute he submitted, but they say it's due to the new tax bracket, but we believe it's bull. So what can he do from here?

He can have a professional do the calc for him and see if SARS are wrong. It is unlikely they're wrong, so he could end up finding himself due two bills instead of one but if he really believes them wrong he's better off having the calc verified and then disputing it that way.

e.g. if he earned 296 540pa - and with his new job he earns 296 541pa - then he's in a new tax bracket.

No, I think you misreading that. Tax works on your income for the year, regardless of source and is always in total. The bracket says they will charge you a flat tax of x and and amount by percentage of the difference for any figure IN THE BRACKET. There is no carry over calculation from one bracket to another.

eg: He earns 200k, his tax liability is the flat portion of R35 253 and a % on the balance ( R200k - R 195 850 = R 4 150 ) @ 26% which equates to R 1079 which makes his tax burden for the year R 36 332. Obviously without any rebates taken into account.

It seems there is some disconnect between the efiling etc.

I went in today again - did my assessment on 2 July, - submitted documentation 2 July, and nothing, so today I ask for statement of account, and suddenly it show that it will pay tomorrow.

That's normal. Not sure what disconnect you're finding with that.

Did you request a statement of account via efiling before you went into the branch?

His new work probably subtracted not enough, make sure about it, otherwise he have the same problem next year.
