SARS IT head leaves

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has terminated the services of suspended executives Mmamathe Makhekhe-Mokhuane and Luther Lebelo with immediate effect.

In a brief statement on Wednesday, SARS said the move is part of Commissioner Edward Kieswetter’s commitment to rebuilding internal and public confidence in the revenue collector.

Fantastic news. I assume tweedle dee and tweedle dum will launch a court process to appeal this and suck up more public funds, but it's a great step in the right direction.

Why does it take almost a year to fire someone from a public office?
You do not want to make a hasty decision and that person goes to the CCMA I guess. I rather it take a year and they tick all the boxes in removing the person than rush it.

The cost to the taxpayer was also considerably more than just her recent salary - it was the wasted time whilst she was in the job and the repercussions of her actions.

Let's hope the AG pursues public officials appropriately to recover funds wasted under their watch from them personally.

Will she now be redeployed with a raise in payment?
