Screamer ADSL

gerasmus I just downloaded and installed steam, updated and am now downloading my games from scratch as a test.
So far, everything has been 100%, other than speed being a little on the slow side, but I have a line fault which still needs to be fixed so 28-38KB/s is not too bad!

I disabled my modedm's firewall though, maybe that's the difference?

My issue is not with the Steam forums. My issue is with the Steam client as stated earlier.
The Steam client probably needs some ports opened, as per the link in my post. Why is the Steam client opening when using 3G, but when using Screamer it doesn't ?

Here are some screen prints from Steam:

When using Screamer, it rarely, if ever, gets past 5% updating:

This is what I expect to see, but I don't:

The Steam client:

And just to show you some places where the weather is much more pleasent than where I live, where it gets 37C every day:

Hey there,

Do you have something like NetLimiter installed on your machine? It might be able to show you where the blockage is, and which port Steam is trying to use... least then you can see if / where the port is being blocked...

Steam is very picky about which ports it uses and unless it gets them, it doesn't work so good... might be router firewall blocking it, not sure if steam uses uPNP to open ports on the routers these days, I know I had to open it manually on mine.

No netlimuter or anything funny installed.
If you (and other people) have Steam running OK I guess you are on ADSL or Wi-Max directly connected to Screamer. The problem is then probably with my provider. I'm not on Wi-max or ADSl but rather on a shared ADSL line. I'm on a fixed wireless. I'm too far out of town for ADSL; I live on a farm.
The set up is as follows:
I have a half-moon shaped dish/grill pointed towards a 'high site' which is in direct line of sight of the antenna. The provider has the Screamer colors all over his offices. I think he uses some sort of software & machines to bond several 4Mb ADSL lines. He then splits bonded up again into 256k/512k/1mb etc parts. Each customer then gets an selected speed. My provider said he doesn't knoiw of any issues with Steam, but I will keep trying.

Are anyone else having similar issues with the same setup as I have ? Could this be because I am on Vodacom Business network (see my IP up earlier), or is Screamer actually just Voda Bus network ?

Read TrueTenacity's post carefylly :) you missed his point.
Download and install net limiter to see if and where ports are being blocked.
If there are then you can call and get it sorted.

Peerblock prevents steam from running properly, even if you have HTTP enabled. I have to disable it all completely when I want to run steam... My 2c..

after buying a new network car this is wat i got today!!!

http://www.speedtest.net/result/728508373.png

first time the whole month i can actually 'surf' the web!

and with regard to those torrent apps that some guys were saying if you dnt run them from start your connection is cool. can you run them later and maintain the browsing speeds?

Back from Dialup speeds

uTorrent (as mentioned by a couple of members) slowed my browsing and downloading speeds to a snail's pace. After turning it off and using only Vuze, I was able to maintain total speeds of 30+k on a 384 line (maxing out at about 40k).

Can howzit or anybody on the technical side of screamer explain why this happens?

They should actually email clients, warning them about it!! Would result in a lot less calls and angry clients!

OK mailed Arthur.... maybe they take up the suggestion.

For Peerblock there's a Steam list as well. Add it as an allow list (not a block list) and Steam will work fine for you.

Funny how the users are figuring all this out... i still can't load more than 1 torrent at a time. I really hope SAINET is worth it, for r50 extra, i will happily switch a heartbeat.

regarding my Steam client not starting up (two pages back)
Advice please. What is PeerBlock ? Is it software ?
In an earlier post someone advised me to run Netlimiter. Steam fails to start on any of my three PC's.
See screenshots, does this mean anything ?
Once again, no issues when using 3G.

Okay, you need to open port 27031 on your router...
