For those of you who don't know...

Seagate Lowers Warranty Period from 5 to 3 Years

Seagate has announced today that effective January 3, 2009, the company will be making some important changes to its limited warranty terms for selected drives. The warranty period for consumer electronics (Seagate Barracuda 7200 included), notebook (Momentus 7200 and Momentus 5400 included) and personal storage bare drives sold to Seagate Authorized Distributors will be changed from 5 years to 3 years. Seagate believes that the new warranty period and terms better reflect current industry standards. Seagate enterprise class drives and Seagate and Maxtor external retail products that have 5-year warranty periods will not be affected by this change. Eish... well doesn't really affect me, I must say. My first Seagate drive has now reached 6 years... still going strong.
 
Seagate drives like most mechanical parts have their moments.

Sometimes you buy a dud, other times you don't.
 
That too... or an old hdd gets broken and returned on a new receipt (ie friend's receipt or maybe a new hdd's receipt).

Hmmm how on earth would you be able to do this considering most companies keep each serial number and scan the hdd.

Sounds fishy to me.
 
so now there is no reason the buy seagate over WD, WD run quieter, cooler and faster and now have the same warrenty
 
This was bound to happen, just how difficult must it be for them to put 1.5T on the same platters that 80GIG platters had on them back then.
We all know more or less how HHD works so yeah its understandable.
 
have to say given i've only ever had one HDD failure since 1990, I am not too concerned.
