Skyfi WISP

You shouldn't have to restart it every day. These devices are clever enough to clear cache. Their is something very wrong with their network as I am typing this on my 3G now just got home and wife said at about 1pm when she got back their has been no Internet.

Exactly. Always on is a thing. I have never heard of a router that requires a restart daily. That being said, my connection is pretty stable (touch wood).

Mine had been down since Thursday and I keep getting the run around. See bellow email from their technicians. I have already made a plan to go onto another wireless provider. I am done with them. But I will not leave it their they are going to pay me back every last cent for the inconvenience they caused me and my business

Good Day

Please be advised, we will only get feedback back Monday as there's no present at the office. I don't have the authority to send technicians out and will have to wait for the technical supervisor should it be the case. Once again, I truly apologies for the inconvenience and will follow up on the case, first thing Monday morning.

Not cool dude... :( Surely they can just phone the supervisor and get telephonic approval. It's probably just that they don't have anyone working weekends, so just an excuse.

I have been using it in Alberton. Not very happy with it. Speedtests are all over the place, never constant. I have the 20mbps, but have cancelled now. Suffer to much with the packet drops and online gaming is a nightmare. Will give Amobia a try and I have used them in the past and they had excellent service. Also a much better contention ratio.

Hey sharkbait,

Thanks for sharing this thread with me. Read all the comments, the more I read the more hesitant it makes me to sign with Skyfi.

You said that you are going to give Amobia a try, how did that go?

Just want to make sure I've covered all providers so I can make a calculated and hopefully correct decision.

Hi Guys, so I had to come and update my status and feeling of Skyfi. I personally ran into the owner of skyfi and two weeks ago and explained all my frustrations to him, he then came to my house with senior technicians and sorted out my link they moved it to a different area on my roof and the link has been extremely stable. Speeds are also really good. He did apologize for the lack of service I have been getting and you could see he was genuine when he said it. Allot of things has since changed at skyfi and I must say their support has gotten allot better.

^ This.

My link has been incredible lately. I still do get the random DC, but all in all my experience is getting better and better. The support line actually works when you dial it and the staff are much more willing to help and phone you back when they promise to.

I have been finding something weird though, and they are looking into it. Although my download when doing a speedtest reads 25 - 28 mpbs when doing an actual download I get about 500-1mbps (I used to get up to 3mbps). It feels like there could be packet drop or jitter on the connection. Jitter I understand seeing as it is wireless, the same with packet drop if there is a weather, but it's been constant now for about a week or so. Techs are investigating though.

I've sent them an email with some questions regarding service and support.

I am gonna sign up with Rapidnet if they confirm LOS next week at the survery. Vox uses them and their prices are good and no stupid upfront install charges before a LOS has even been done.

Yes but 12 month contract. What'll you do if the speed sucks?

To me it seems as if every wireless ISP has its own problems and difficulties. I stay about 2km from the nearest Skyfi tower in Alberton and would like to give them a try. The only problem is the 12 month contract. I think the closer to the tower you stay the better the connection will be, in theory. I'm still thinking about it...

If the WISP runs normal 802.11, or NStream or something, then yes - that would be true. If they run on a TDMA based technology such as NV2 for example, then everyone would get the same size slice of the pie, regardless of how close you are. The downside being however that TDMA generally carries higher latencies.

I'm solely talking strength of signal, connection would be more stable, hopefully less interference.

@Salt, have you joined Skyfi?

Nope not going to. No comfortable with paying for a service up front I don't even know if I am going to be able to get. Seems fishy to me. Every other company I've ever used of worked with does the LOS for free. Doesn't feel right to me. Rapidnet is coming tomorrow for a LOS - no charge

True that.

It seems as if their support improved as far as I could gather from the forum.

However, the long term contract and installation costs are putting me off.

If you're confident in your product you should not have to force someone into a 12 or 24 month contract.

But, seems I'll never get a WISP, all of them have their own terrifying problems.
