So your answer is what? If we live inland we can't eat fish? I understand that of course fish is not going to be as fresh as it is down by the coast. But if you go to a decent fishmonger you will find some nice options to choose from. Inspection being paramount wherever you buy fish from.

Whilst freshly-caught fish does taste much better than frozen, it's still a healthy and tasty option. Having moved inland from CPT, I miss the fresh stuff, but that won't stop me from enjoying a delicious paella, snoek-braai, grilled fish, fried fish or fish curry!

The only way to eat snoek is snoek braai. It sounds disgusting, but whichever way you do snoek, usually there is some jam in the marinade, usually apricot... and it works!! F__king well I might add

Again, I beg to differ from this incorrect generalisation :D

A straight lemon butter + garlic basting is incredibly good too. I prefer this to the jam-based marinade now. Not to disrespect the sweet tang of the apricot jam variety, which is also delicious.

On the braai side, have you had snoek-pate on toast yet? Loverly stuff. So is traditional Cape "snoek smoor", where the fish is fried with a tomato and onion reduction. Truly wonderful

Also straight up fried in egg and flour is also lekker with fresh white bread, or maybe I'm just biased towards my moms cooking. Don't get me started on snoek roe, smoored or fried.

How about canned sardines in tomato sauce?

Was told by the dock that BF should eat this ( omegas and cooked tomatoes very good for the heart and prostate:eek:) I make it like Tuna mayo on health bread, i have done a lot for health the last year:eek:.

Oh and the mayo is the healthy stuff too:( not as tasty but i have to live with it as it contains no bad cholestrol.

Or pilchards? Heat em in a pan with a little olive oil & garlic, whisk up an egg, dump over the fishy and grate some cheddar over that. Finish with oregano. Nasty bachelor-food FTW

There is no way to say this an not come off snooty but basically: get to the coast, braai some snoek right there on the beach and you will know what I have been on about.

A chef friend of mine put it very well - fish should be treated like eggs: handled with extreme care and cooked very lightly.

I imagine most of the posters in this thread are prone to overcooking fish quite drastically, in fact most restaurants that I have been to cook fish to the point that it flakes apart and think thats how it ought to be. Think: seared tuna - that is how to prepare fish, you can go quite extreme in the case of a fish like yellowtail where the outside has a crust and there is a 1-2mm section right in the centre thats virtually cold.
Once you have experienced fish prepared correctly - trust me: there is no turning back! :)

Hmmm... Lived inland all my life, eat loads of fish, never gotten ill from it... Proves that silly theory wrong.

Actually much of the fish we eat in SA (even at the sea) doesn't come from within our own borders. I have heard that much of it comes from Mozambique, and in fact the owner of Codfather in JHB confirmed this with me not too long ago...
