Software pirate caught in sting operation

I think he means those who do it and sell for profit.

I understand - but where do u draw the line? Say you download your favourite TV series and then the emotional drive to buy it is lost - so you don't buy it, instead you have extra cash in the bank. Surely - you made a profit?

Does that include those who download the latest eps of LOST from torrentz and not buy them on DVD?
(They did it for money too.)

Peter do you miss the point of threads because you are slow or because you just like to miss them?

How are you asking him if selling software and downloading an episode is fine? You confuse me so much because i can see you are intelligent but sometimes i think you act ignorant for some reason. Etienne said people who sell pirated goods should be locked up you go on to ask if downloading an episode is the same thing peter, think about what etienne has said before posting a reply.

I think you mean would downloading episode's and selling be the same thing pter and yes it would be.

Besides if you download a series you do not need to buy the dvd if you have dstv nooblet :D

Good. Like I've said countless times before, people who pirate for money must be locked up.

Ooh they are such evil, maybe we should chop off their heads too.

So a friend of friend offers you 1000 top-end movies on a hard drive for a few hundred rand. You might say no, but your others friends think it's a great deal.
Yeah the dealer is performing a criminal act. Whether he deserves to be locked up depends on the circumstances.

Your statement is narrow viewed.

It is not narrow at all, by selling other people's work you are making money off something that is not yours.

How can people not grasp the concept?

Yes, fill up the prisons with people who pirate software. It's fine for them to get their future raped away in some prison, who in effect was doing nothing more than allow other people easier access to software which should have been made accessible in the first place.

Knowledge, and the tools to acquire them, should always be free and accessible to all people.

So you're telling me the R30k I've spent on tuition fees was a waste and it should have been free?! And the R50k my work paid for me to go on training should also have been free?! And the extra math classes I took in school should also have been free?!?!!

Thanks for the heads up! I'll sue start suing those institutions immediately!

Let's ignore that rant. killa next time don't answer questions not aimed at you, pretty please. You're very eager and I realise you know the laws and rights and wrongs here.

EtienneK, I'm not against you but I'm curious how you determine the degree of profit. If someone downloads a TV show instead of buying it - surely that is profit? I'm speaking not in terms of the law here but in terms of figuring out how people reason these things.

Besides if you download a series you do not need to buy the dvd if you have dstv nooblet :D

Uh...wrong.

While I understand what you're trying to say, and in a way I can empathise, that is not the case. Watching DSTV does not give you the right to record that intellectual property in any long-term persistent manner.

AFAIK the only reason you are allowed to use those PVR decoders is because you can't transfer that recorded show to another medium.

Porch i pay 500 bucks a month for dstv man, if i want to download the latest series so i do not have to sit through 25 mins of ads there is nothing wrong with it as i pay for dstv and could easily watch the series via dstv.

I pay for those series with my subscription and that is how the series make money, they do not care if you download the series as long as you contribute to the success by having a network that buys it.

Is it my fault i do not want to sit through ads on dstv? Series are about 41 minutes long, that means roughly 19 minutes of ads which is not right considering i pay 500 bucks and i am still subjected to ads :(.

How am i being a hypocrite here?

I do not sell the series so i am unsure what your comment is based on.

It's irrelevant whether you've paid DSTV or not. You are self justifying the illegal downloading of Copyrighted material.

Just like anyone else who does it.

I have never said downloading pirated stuff is bad now have i? I have said selling what you download is bad. It will sink in one day i am sure.

I do not need to justify downloading copyrighted goods but i do not sell the stuff and make money off other people's work.

So again how am i being a hypocrite?
