Solar heating for pool

Geez - I was quoted just under R4k last year for three panels by an installer.

(PS - can't say I'm impressed with Sun Command - bought their LED Pool light, it gave up after a few months and I couldn't get them to honour the warranty, didn't bother returning calls, emails, etc)

Got a few quotes, most about R7200 for 6 panels. May oversize by 1 for just in case;)

You may have to upgrade your filtration system depending on distance, height etc.

Not forgetting a solar blanket to preserve heat.

It's a costly affair

I would like to start this thread up again. What is the pricing for solar pool heaters now? My pool is about 5x4

Any recommendations for solar heating in the modderfontein are?
I received a quote for 20k for a 6x3m pool. I find that to be quite excessive.

Ouch...
We looking at having a 6*3 built with a heating system when we doing the house renovations.

6x3 is 3 panels at about 2.5k each, plus piping and valves.

That sounds more reasonable. I received another quote last night. 13500 for 4 panels and installation. 4 panels seems a lot for such a small pool.

On a different note. I have been told my 0.75kw pump is not powerful enough and will need to upgrade to the 1.1kw pump as well as the filter to a 4 bag filter. The pump is roughly 10m away from the wall that goes to the roof of my double story home.

Double story is the issue, not the distance. Though, with that size pool the 0.75 will probably still be fine. They can pump to a 12 meter head if I'm not mistaken. You will not need to upgrade the filter.
My pool is 6x4, I have 3 panels and the pool is currently 30 degrees. If I put a cover on it gets a LOT warmer... was 35 during the drought.

Your pump needs to be able to pump a certain head (Height). 1.1kw is what you safely need. I have a 6x3,5 pool. Was advised to install 4 panels, but could only fit 3 on the section of the roof I wanted it on. Last week Monday the pool temp was 33C, way too hot to cool down. That was the last day of the heatwave, mind you. On average it gets the pool to 30C, which is perfect.

I went to ProAutoRubber in Boksburg and bought the panels from them. R1200excl/panel. The pipes, fittings, glue, vacuum breaker, isolation valve and NRV set me back about R1000 in total. So, for under R5000 I had solar heating. I did the job myself. Took me about 5 hours in total and no special skills required. Worthwhile DIY job.

Guess the 4th panel will come into play in Autumn/Spring. For now I am happy.

I'm still considering doing this at some stage. Currently have a heat pump installed which gets the pool up to about 25-27 degrees during the day. I'm happy with that temperature but it just guzzles power.

I'd have to replace a lot of the existing equipment though if I went solar. Currently have 2 0.75kw motors installed, one for the actual filter and one for the fountains. The filter is only rated for a 0.75kw motor though and would have to be replaced if I went solar as the panels would go on the second storey of the house.

The alternative is to replace the pump for the fountains with a 1.1kw, this has no bearing on the filter or heat pump as it runs on a separate line. I'm not sure how effective this would be though unless I add another outflow directly into the pool and bypass the fountains. Positive to this way is that I could run the solar and heat pump at the same time or independently and use the pool as a communal bath for the family if needs be.

First step is to fix the leak though.
