Solar heating for pool

My solar heating has significantly increase the frequency and duration during the year that we swim. Installed it about 2 or 3 years ago and it was roughly R1000 per panel. I used Solar Xtreme - I looked around a bit beforehand and was happy with their pricing and service. Although they recommend I put in 9 panel, while I opted to only install 6, which was a good move (I have a big pool). My old 0.75kW motor works perfect to push the water to a single story roof. My only workaround needed was to close off one of the pool inlets so the pressure is enough to circulate through the roof, but this is really because I did not want to replace all the existing piping.

If your family like swimming I reckon it is a great investment.

Just put a ball valve on the return pipe after the solar feed is teed off so all the water goes through the panels when it's closed

Anyone with slab roofs using solar panels?

I'm curious to see how you guys placed the panels ? On the floor or did you make a rack/table for the panels to sit/lean on?

I have a flat roof - not a slab... the panels are flat on the roof.

You can see them in the roof top right

Average about 30 degrees - if I put the cover on its about 35 degrees, been as high as 42.

Thanks for the reply.

I had mines flat on the roof, but last week I was doing maintenance (waterproofing) and removed the panels. I figured in the long run it would be easier to place them on a rack. the amount of mud that builds up beneath the panel which corrodes the silver protective paint as well as the torch-on mat (if that's what it is) is too risky.

I recently installed some panels and solar blanket. My pool is small, 3m x 4m.

I now find the chlorine is super high ( I used the big floater on the small setting), apparently the blanket traps most of the chlorine in the pool.

How are you guys balancing the amount of cholrine? Using a small float or leaving the blanket off for a while?

With a blanket you'll need far less chemicals than without.

Don't use floaters. Those things are terrible. Chlorine stabilizer builds up in the water and eventually you have to flush most of the water out to get rid of it.
