Sony Ericsson P990i

yep phone seems to have "settled in" havent had any re starts or ppl complaining they cant get through.

Lets hope it last :)

Hey Guys... the webcam ap is really cool thanx Nixxon!

I am however sitting hear with my HANDS IN MY HAIR! I've never used bluetooth from my P990i to connect to my laptop, until using the webcam app.

Both devices are set up to be trusted, but when I go into the bluetooth menu of my phone, and choose connect from the drop down menu, the connection fails.

In the same way, if I select a file on my laptop, and try to send it to my phone, the transfer fails, saying either the bluetooth computer or device did not respond.

Then I went into my M-Router's Bluetooth settings to see if it will connect to my phone. It detects the phone, but when I click connect, I receive an error msg: Failed to connect to P990 Reason: The requested address is not valid in its context.

I am more than happy with the whole USB connection but this is very frustrating as I would like to be able to use bluetooth as well, especially since I've now fiddled and I JUST WANT TO!

Has anyone else encountered this problem, or heard of it, and had ANY idea how to fix it?

bluetooth webcam

Try upgrading bluetooth drivers for laptop. That worked for me when i tried to listen to radio on my laptop speakers

I have the same problem. I can however transfer photos and things but when i open my PC suite i cant connect via blue tooth. I have followed all the instructions. I even phoned DELL and they seem more clueless than I am.
My Friend at voda shop said I must bring it for him to take a look at. I know what you talking about. Its there so you want to use it:mad: .
Good luck:o

What Changes with the Firmware Upgrade ?

Hi,

Just wondering what changes with the latest super-duper firmware upgrade ?

Will things like Contacts, Internet Accounts etc all still be there or do I need to backup contacts first ?

Thanks,

J.
-----------
8 hours later and a firmware upgrade under my belt ...

I backed up my contacts into Outlook 2003, as well as a vcf file off the phone. Seemed to have lost all info on the INFO tab of the previous contacts though where it forced me to put fax numbers, bit of a pity. Also lost a few contacts somewhat randomly.

One issue I noticed was that the first backup using PC Suite to Outlook, saw only contacts up to 'm' being saved, had I not checked I would have lost everyone from 'N' onwards, it did this twice, only the 3rd synch saved all contacts.

Phone is indeed much quicker without transitions.

One positive I noticed : Previously, with flip closed, I could not run apps that I had installed, but now, with flip closed, they run, definitely an improvement in terms of use.

One question if anyone has experienced it, I have Outlook 2003 on my Win Xp SP2 PC but cannot synch the calendar, it always bombs at the first date & time entry, presumably doesn't like the syntax. Anyone else experience this ? Is there any way to over ride the field mappings maybe ?

Thanks,

J.

Hi All,

I told you all that I would let you know once the Software becomes available for SE P990's to turn your phone into a webcam...

Here is the link : http://www.warelex.com/products/webcam/index.php

It works well... the unfortunate thing is that it only uses the rear camera for now... They are busy with development to use the front cam and the microphone... thus creating a fully functional webcam with Skype cababilities.

If anyone wants more info PM me. :D
I'm really struggling with the webcam. Installed the software on phone and PC but no image. Buffering seems to work. When I choose viewfinder the image block stays black. Any suggestions? Too bad the evaluation time is only 7 days. You guys know when Fring will be available for the P990i. Sent all my friends with Nokia's the link and now they're all running Skype from their phones, but P990i not supported yet.

Any the webcam suddenly decided to work...

how is the Updating Service work? I downloaded it and it just Checking for Update for the past 20 mins? Is there a trick to this little program to get it working or what?

Edit: Nevermind...guess it was perhaps just a hickcup in the downloading of the file. Wish there was a download status so we can see wtf is happening. But it sure is slow when it's downloading the software updates.

P990i Calendar Synched with Outlook - Finally !

Hi,

In the hope it helps someone else, I have battled for 6 months since getting my P990i to synch the calendar. It always bombs with an error message about there being a Type Mismatch with the date & time format. But as of 5 minutes ago I have finally done it !

My particular setup is Novell Groupwise & MS Outlook 2003 on an XP SP2 Dell Latitude D620.

The clue came here on a French forum :
http://www.mobilitycommunity.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=4943

... my school French isn't brilliant so I used the Altavista Babelfish service to translate the postings one by one.

It starts by questioning whether the date & time format in your P990i is the same as that in your PC (Control Panel / Regional Settings), mine was but I changed the 'Short Date' & 'Long Date' formats to be the same anyway = "29/04/2007") ... not sure this had anything to do with my success.

Things worked when I did the following :-

- On the SE PC Suite click the "+" button next to "Synchronize Now".

- On the new window that appears, on the SETTINGS button, ensure the calendar is selected with a tick, otherwise I left everything as default.

- On the ADVANCED SYNC button select the final option = MERGE. It is this that the French person reccomends.

- And as they say in French "Voila" !

Its been 6 months and many a frustrating work day not having my diary with me !

Cheers,

J.

Thanks J, for sharing the advice with us. I still have the default 2 hours offset between my tasks created in Outlook and what is being synced with my phone.. so I'll give you advice a try!

The new Updating Service (SEUS) is particularly known for being slow. It also nearlly killed my 2G databundle (via USB HSDPA modem).. Hopefully the next one in June will be less drastic.

can you guys tell me what freeware apps/games you are using on a daily basis?

Hey guys and Trix

I think the prob may be my bluetooth drivers - problem is I got the dongle as a 'hand me down' basically from a friend, so no software or anything - what I had was what windows automatically installed.

I'd since installed Bluesoleil but with even less luck than before with M-Router, and though my phone sees my computer as a 'headset' with bluesoleil, I can't get sound to go through the computer.

I can't find a decent way to get drivers for my dongle - it's almost as if it doesn't exist. Anyway I've given up and will take on this one day when I have the guts to reinstall windows and just start over.

Hi PsyLenT

Look on your BT dongle for a model name/number. Do a Google search on that number - you might/should find drivers for it that way.

Usually certain hardware technologies are mass produced and bought by & sold under different brands, but the model number normally stays the same. Hopefully you will find drivers linked to that model number. That fact that Windows were able to install standard BT drivers for your device is a good sign for what it's worth.

Give that a try before you consider reinstalling Windows. Let us know.

Good luck!

Linux

Hi,

Has anyone managed to get the P990i or M600i to connect to Linux with mrouter?

Thank you,

My diary arrived with a one hour difference from my PC, so an 8.00 a.m. meeting in Outlook showed up as a 7.00 a.m. meeting in my P990.

I went into the time settings of the P990 using the greyish-black icon in the bottom left corner of the screen and then selected SET LOCATION off the drop down menu on that page.

I changed CURRENT TIME ZONE to CENTRAL AFRICA time by selecting Pretoria off the list and everything in my diary miraculously corrected itself by 1 hour, no resynching required.

Not sure I understand the logic but the other 2 time settings I left alone at :-

HOME TIME ZONE = Greenwich Time (select London I assume)

ZONE OF INTEREST = ditto

I have previously tried changing these and found the times went off in all directions.

Maybe check your settings and see if they tally ?

J.

Thanks J, I tried all that before, but I'll try again. I can't understand why they made the locations settings of the P990 so confusing.

Cheers

Here are the known bugs still present in R9F011 - let's hope SE fix it all with the next firmware release! ;)

1. Alarm sound only ~10% of requested volume at start, then gradually increases in volume during play (prevents songs being used as alarm sounds - ascending/constant volume should at least be configurable) - -
2. Speed contacts application no longer works for some users - menu do not react and "Reading from SIM" is displayed - my-symbian
3. Pictures taken with camera that are in the memory stick camera folder can't be renamed using the built-in file manager. Swiss Manager Pro's file manager has no problem renaming pictures in the DCIM\100MSDCF folder which is the actual folder, displayed in the built-in file manager as Picture\Camera (depending on language the name displayed changes!) This bug seems to occur only if the P990 is used in a language other than English. - -
4. Some users report data connections stop working until phone is rebooted (browser reports "can't connect to remote server" without attempting to initiate a data connection, seems more likely to happen if always on email enabled) - -
5. Memory leaks are still present - free RAM (while running no applications) declines to 9-10MB after the phone has been used for a few hours. The phone handles the leaks much better though, and can handle a 0MB free situation without rebooting. (Some of the "lost" memory might be applications getting preloaded for faster start later.) - -
6. Notification LED flashes until reboot when new email received sometimes (via ActiveSync) - -
7. Virtual keyboard does not work when web browser is in fullscreen or landscape mode - esato
8. Some users have reported the display backlight does not turn off after playing a video - esato
9. Battery is drained if the camera app is left running in the background - se-dev
10. Applications moved from Tools to other menu folders are sometimes reset back to Tools - se-dev
11. Opera crashes are still being reported - my-symbian esato
12. Random restarts "to improve performance" are still occurring - my-symbian
13. Sometimes when handsfree kit is removed the screen backlit stays lit - -
14. In "Call Log" screen / Individual calls (select call from list) -> contact image is very small - -
15. Audio volume on headset is still very low. Even with MP3's at 99db there is not enough volume. This applies to the supplied headset and Sennheiser MX-50 which are very good on other devices. Volume supplied to BT is also way too low and the FM radio is also not nearly loud enough. - -
16. Thumbnail images on speed dials and picture gallery are distorted. Image compression does not seem to work properly making thumbnails in gallery and speed dials very difficult to see. - -
17. During the playback of a movie with the built in media player, the keypad light is always on. This should be turned off to conserve battery. - -
18. Alarm is ringing on Saturday and does not on Monday with settings: "Working days only(Mon-Fri)" and "Sunday" as starting day of the week - -
19. ScreenLight Still Stays on When In A PhoneCall (Thus Draining the battery for no obvious point) - -
20. An Appointment created in the calendar app. on Sunday March 25th 2007 4am to 5am set for infinite repeat yearly by day crashes the calendar app on save or when any of the repeat dates is displayed in the calendar. - -
