Symbian’s UIQ Hidden Service Menu:![]()
There is a hidden service menu in Sony Ericsson’s UIQ 3 smartphones. It can be accessed in Flip closed mode on the main screen (so called "Activity menu") or using the virtual phone keypad in Phone application. In emergency (e.g. when you need to reformat the phone) the engineering menu can also be accessed on the "Enter PIN" screen after turning the phone on.
To activate the hidden menu close the flip or use the virtual keypad and enter the following combination:
jog dial up * jog dial down jog dial down * jog dial down *
The Service information screen contains following options: Service information, Service tests and Format internal disk.
Service information menu displays information about phone model, software (firmware) versions, IMEI number of the device, information about sim-locks and a list of supported GSM/UMTS bands and speech codec rates.
Service tests section lets you test various hardware components of your device, including speakers, microphone, keyboard, camera, touch screen, vibrator, memory card and more.
The "Format internal disk" function lets you fully format the internal storage memory of your phone. This is useful if you want to get rid of all your data (e.g. when you're going to sell the phone) or if you are experiencing problems with the device. Be careful with this feature.

Hi Gecko
I've tried your instructions - but no success.
Could you please explain in more detail:
Thank you!
E
@ErnstF -
Select Control panel-->Connections-->Internet Accounts-->click the arrow at top of Internet Account screen-->Options-->Preferred Mode-->Select CS only.
The blue GPRS triangle above your signal strength indicator will blank out.
If you browse the web or receive an mms, the phone activates it automatically for the duration of the connection and switches it off again afterwards .
I'm afraid those instructions won't work on a P990i, ErnestF.
If you're talking about a jog-dial that goes up and down, you're talking either about the P800, P900 or P910, which all have 5 way jog-dials. The P990i only has a 3 way jog-dial - left, forward and right.
I seriously hope you haven't damaged your P990i's jog-dial.
*Let me guess - it's your first SE P-series phone? Welcome to our world.![]()
@ErnestF
jogdial down means turn the jogdial one click downwards towards the bottom of the phone ( where the charger port is ), then press the * key once....the combination above certainly pulls up the hidden service menu on my phone...
@kingrob.....hmmm I'd describe the jogdial direections as " up / down / in " rather ...has the king been indulging in some Grolsch perhaps ?![]()

( holding the phone vertically anyway, holding it for landscape viewing I would concede your description ! )

Hi King.
Yip - first SE phone. Really enjoying it. Really learning alot.
Saw myself as quite clued up with cellphones, IT etc, but after getting the P990 my confidence is rock botton. Used to have a Nokia 6230 which I knew and used inside out.
PS: Jog dial still working fine - thanx. Went to Vodacare Store today to get internet sorted out - guy helped me - everything working 100% - decided to do master reset tonight due to kernel and .exe errors. Lost internet settings - will have 2 go to Vodacom again tomorrow. Learning the hard way.![]()
