Speeds on 4mbps?

I hope you get sorted out and btw how far are you from the exchange cos i am sure once you are sorted on 4MB you gonna want to get upped to 8MB :D

Best of luck Lycanthrope :)

Good to know you are back to error-free 4Mbps ;) I take it the speed test is back up to the 2.9Mbps (?) level?

I've noticed over the last month that it fluctuates greatly. During the day it's dreadful - 300-600kbps if I'm lucky; at night it's between 1000-2000kbps.

Router's been up for 4 hours, 31 minutes and still no errors whatsoever. So I'm concluding that the previous CRC's and other errors were definitely my doing. I guess I should've thought of that at the time, huh? *slaps head*

I'm not sure how much I trust Speed.io's ping test though. My ping from Cape Town to JHB on Speedtest.net is 93 at the moment and usually about 105+ (and that's a pretty big PLUS ;))

I'm looking forward to what they figure out. Was mildly annoyed earlier with them lowering it to 1024, but I'll let it slide as a miscommunication on their end.

Damn straight! Thanks Yuu :D

*sigh* At least I know if I get the DSL sorted that I don't have to put too much consideration into moving ;)

The exchange/DSLAM is about 500-800m away from my apartment. Although I think it might be a bit longer considering I'm 6-storeys up, but I don't think that should make too much of a difference.

Just got a call from someone from Telkom - around 16:20 - asking (again) what my trouble with my ADSL is.

Really, I find it funny. They all ask me the same questions over and over again:

Q: What's the trouble with your ADSL?
A: Download speeds are awful and latency is worse.

Q: Who's your ISP?
A: I have an account with IS and another with SAIX via TelkomInternet.

This time I was told that it seems that there have been a number of problems "in that area" (mine) and that he's handing it over to "the specialist." o.o

I could be wrong... but shouldn't they keep a log of what I've been whining about instead of having to phone me up each time and ask me? And for the love of cheese, why do they keep telling me that they're handing it over to someone ELSE? Why can't they just have the guy that's meant to deal with it, deal with it from the start? o.o

Telkom confuses me...

Edit:

I just got a text saying:
"This is a progress update from Telkom SA. Fault 298CWK15---- for Service ID 021914---- is in-hand with our tech repair division."

Woopdidoo...

What happens if you remove all lines from the telephone jack and just use ADSL? Does it improve?

A text from 021-425 7454:

Dear Customer, Fault 298CWK15---- for service ID 021914----, has been resolved. If you Do Not Reply to the sms within 24 hours the fault ref will be cleared. TSA

And again, nothing's changed. Weee...

Bulwa (I think that was his name) just phoned to make a "follow-up call." After telling him that absolutely sweet booger-all as changed he tried convincing me that it might be in my best interest to lower my line speed to a "2-meg profile."

I told him that my line speed has already been lowered to a 1-meg profile and it does nothing in the slightest to fix it, and in fact, makes it worse.

He then attempted convincing me that if they lower it to a "2-meg profile" that it will eventually "stabilise" my connection and that they'd be able to raise it afterwards once it's "stablised." I mean... wtf?!

Look, I'll be quite content if they tell me some nonsense about me being too high up or that my complex's cable is currently drowned by dam water or something PROBABLE! But it seems like each and every time the "easiest answer" is best for them.

Regardless, Mr Bulwa is apparently sending out a technician... Hopefully I'll be able to talk sense with someone -.-'

Still no word of a techie...

 I feel for you!

No worries - I feel for me too :(

I just love how regardless of how much I stress that it's not a synchronisation problem they keep thinking that lowering the synch will change anything.

*twiddles thumbs* I wonder what the techie will have to say...

*goes to devour some potatoes drenched in peri-peri* :D

I see that speedtest.net has added Botswana and Windhoek to the mix. Watch your performance DIVE as data crosses the border!

My tests to JHB and CPT are basically the same except JHB ping (17ms) and CT (35ms). Avg throughput is:
Down - 3500kbit/sec
Up - 450kbit/sec

Pff.. gloater :p But thank you for your input :) It's appreciated :D

Another tech came along and just left a few minutes ago. Very nice guy. I especially liked the bit where he called up the test centre and sounded as though he was having a polite argument with the guy on the other end. He kept saying, "Yes, but he's not even getting a quarter of the speed."

Again, another tech says something's wrong but my line is clean. He just went to the DSLAM to test the port and request a divert and some other stuff, but apparently that's all he can do and if none of that helps, it has to get escalated to yet another "specialist." And it just dawned on me I never asked about that.

*sits back and waits for a miracle*

He just called - switched my DSLAM port, it seems, and there's a minor improvement.

He said that at the port it read about 2,200kbps. So I have some certainty that it's not me at all. He said he's forwarding it to the "experts at transmissions." So... I guess we'll see what comes of it.

*sigh*

Interesting. At least it has been picked up that it is a problem at the DSLAM itself and not something related to your line or a synching issue. Now, whether they actually action it this way is another matter :(

Yep. What scares me is that it's just over 1000kbps, which means it qualifies as a 1MB line. I'm sure we all know Telkom's stance on, "We don't guarantee 4mbps!"

My only defence in that regard is that my latency is awful. An example would be Flanders' 17ms and 35ms for JHB and Cape Town, respectively. With me, that's well over 50-70ms difference from here to JHB. Whether Telkom like to admit it or not, that is a significant problem.

The only thing I can do is wait and see. Somehow, I can't help but feel as though I'm one tiny voice complaining against the odds of, "Eh, you're the only one that's complained, so it's not financially viable for us to replace the DSLAM - or whatever might be causing the problem."

To be absolutely honest, I don't think they'll fix it. I could be wrong, I really hope I'm wrong, but... eh... What can I say? Telkom's track record isn't exactly brilliant.

Lycanthrope - do a test on www.speedtest.net and post your results. (Also do one to JHB to check ping) I'd be curious to see what you get.

JHB:

825kbps down
408kbps up
117ms

Cape Town:

481kbps down
402kbps up
98ms

*sigh* Nice to see it's back to its old self -.-'

That definitely looks like there's some sort of routing problem in your area. You're in CT and your CT ping is 118ms?? Eish. I think they've got carrier pigeons carrying your packets down there. Hopefully it's temporary.

CT ping is 98 ;)

And nope, not temporary - been the same ever since I had the line installed roughly the 10th of August. The last techie that was here is the second so far. So, as I said, we'll see what happens. I'm not holding my breath, however. At least I know it's a fault at the DSLAM, not me ;)
