Out of curiosity, what speeds to you guys generally get on 4mbps?

After doing a speed test at www.speedtest.net I seem to download at peak speeds of approximately 2781kbps and upload at approximately 412kbps? Is that normal for a 4mbps line? I'm with IS, btw.

Thanks!

We get

hi my speeds on a 4096 line are

speed test to joburg

3880kbps d/l
418 kbps u/l

speed test using sentech speed test with 2mb file

3998 kbps d/l
355 kbps u/l

it depends on your phone line quality of copper and distance from exchange plus many other things.......

oh yeah also on IS

I;m doing speeds in the 320kB/s to 350kB/s for most of the time these days. It does reach 420kB/s when downloading from local sites but not all of the time. When I feel i have the energy I will phone the Telkom helpdesk to ask them to reset my profile again.

*nod* *nod* Up speed doesn't faze me too much as long as it's above 300. But I'm annoyed that my DSL pretty much runs at a little more than half its capacity... I guess it's fine for now though, but what about when (HAHAHA!) 8mbps/16mbps DSL comes around? Will it still be the same, or will it run at about 5 or 6 mbps then?

Ignore me, I'm just thinking out loud. By then I'd've moved, Hell would've frozen over and Neotel would be offering fibre-to-home. I guess it's fine for now... I'd just like it running higher than 3500kbps.

Mine fluctuates, like a curry filled bowl.

It normally comes in at 3800ish but sometime it doesn't make it past 2500.

*Wonders if Telkom feed's its lines curry?

I consistently get between 3400-3500Kbps download and 420-430Kbps upload. I'm jealous of the guys getting 3800Kbps :p

Lycanthrope, 2781Kbps is very low. What are you synching at? And what are your line noise and attenuation figures?

Local SNR: 20.5
Local Attn: 10.0
Remote SNR: 13
Remote Attn: 6.0

Synch speed? Those are really good figures, by the way (although with such low attentuation, I would have expected the SNR to be higher).

Does your router report errors (e.g. CRC, LOS, LOF, etc.?) And is your SNR stable at 20.5dB?

Sorry, forgot to add synch speed -.-' *slaps head*They're 4096 & 512 respectively.

Everything's pretty stable. I don't have errors or any connection difficulties whatsoever. Except of course that downloads hover between 2,300kbps and 2,700kbps. I think the highest it's gone is about 2900 :)

It just bothers me that it's not running as fast as it should. I'd be fine if it at least hovered around 3,500kbps. I guess I'm just picky.

Thanks :)

Im getting about the same...

Heard a rumor that lines are being upgraded? 4MBps will be pushed up to 8MBps?
Is this true? If so then when?

This is really strange. You're not being picky - I don't see why your speeds should be so much slower if everything indicates that your line is as good/stable as those of us who are getting 3400+kbps.

* What modem/router are you using?
* Have you always had 4Mbps? Has it always performed at this speed?
* Do you have anything else connected to the phone line that your ADSL line is on (e.g. fax, other telephones, alarm, etc.?)
* When you do speedtest.net, what ping do you get?
* Have you tried other speed tests (e.g. the ones I did in the thread linked to from my signature)?

The only reason I can think of for your line to not be operating as fast as it should is that you are getting errors while transferring. However, you mention that this is not the case. Do you have error figures from your routers control panel that you can paste here, or are they zero?

SAIX 4MB Telkom Internet

DL - 3495 kb/s
UL - 310 kb/s

DL/UL
Noise margin (dB) 9.8 6.0

Output power (dBm) 19.6 12.4

Attenuation (dB) 57.0 30.5 <---LOL

That's just what it is - a rumour. If I recall correctly, Telkom has not announced anything (can't recall if they denied it either). It was expected/predicted/rumoured that they would trial 8Mbps for 4Mbps users starting August (or whenever they announce new prices for the year) along with more bandwidth (higher caps) being provided for the same amount of money. Unfortunately, none of it was true. In typical Telkom fashion, we were let down (read: screwed) and instead prices went up slightly, and more bandwidth was not provided

I do recall someone from Telkom posting his line stats from an 8Mbps test line so it's not entirely impossible that we will get it eventually, though... Doesn't do too much good if caps stay the same though.

I would also like to know what ping you guy's are getting with the 4meg lines on speedtest.net.
