Speeds on 4mbps?

...
One thing that I noticed - and I'm sure you could correct me or explain it - is that the D-Link I pointed out supports ADSL2/2+ - sort of future-proofing, whereas the Netgear doesn't seem to have that.

The DG834GT definitely supports ADSL2/2+. I think it is pretty much a given that any router you buy today will support ADSL2/2+. The real question is whether Telkom will support it...

...
I don't plan on doing anything too fancy. The only features which really interest me are how future-proof it will be and whether or not it supports UPnP. WiFi is a must for the laptop and the other odd little things that use it.

The DG834GT does support UPnP (although I have never used this functionality). Also, don't be fooled by the 108Mbps rated speed though - it's a proprietary extension to the wireless g standard that Netgear created to let two "Super G", Netgear wireless devices communicate at that speed. In other words, unless you get a Netgear Super G USB or PCMCIA card for your laptop, you won't be transferring at 108Mbps...

...
Oh, and finally... The D-Link is black :) It'll go wonderfully with my computer :D

The Netgear is "iPod White". Hands down victory ;)

...
I have to admit that I'd like to be able to use RouterStats and similar software. While not necessary - as silly as it sounds - I love being able to see how hardware works and whether or not it's working correctly.

I'm the same way. You can't get much more 'tweakable' than the DG834GT. It runs a flavour of linux that you can telnet into if you like (or let RouterStats do that for you). There are even custom firmwares out there on the net. Of course, these things aren't limited to Netgear and the D-Link may very well have them, but you are going to have to do some research online and make sure that this is the case.

Good luck! Let us know what you decide on.

You're right. However, it's an omission rather than an unsupported feature. Perhaps because it was added in via firmware updates later. If you take a look at: http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/D103204.asp , see point 10 under v1.01.28:

Updated the ADSL driver to improve ADSL2 and ADSL2+ support.

I feel like a Netgear salesman. I should get commission on the unit you eventually buy :p

@ fz1 - hahaha :D Alright, alright :p I'll get that one then :D Even though it's icky and white :p

Thank you, fz1 - be aware that any problems I have with the unit will be directed at you :p :p :p

lol, so that's what the friendship request was for :D You're welcome... And I'll be happy to help (knowing that you won't have issues with it). I just hope that the router is the reason your connection is not working as fast as it should.

Thats the same router i'm using and YES it does support adsl2/2+ because it says on the packaging and in the new firmware it mentions better support for adsl2+.
I have had no problems with this router:):)
Woohoo! +1 to getting it then :p Thanks ^.^

Nonsense :p It was a completely-- well, mostly-- un-related request :D Well, if it can't be the attenuation or the SNR, I'm not sure what else it could be. Worst case scenario, with a new router I won't have that annoying ringing in my ears :)

Please can someone tell me how I check my attenuation and other highly technical, geekazoid, details on my line. I'm dying to know them.

I have a premium combo router

@ gambit hunt - My previous router was a marconi combo... But I had the firmware update, so I'm guessing it won't be too much help, but I'll try anyway.

In your browser hit 10.0.0.2
Enter username and password: admin; administrator (by default)
Click on Configuration on the left
Then click on ADSL Configuration or whatever it says right at the bottom. Everything should be on the right. Although you may have to find where it says, "Show Advanced settings" or whatever to show the SNR and attenuation and all that.

I hope that helps... The firmware update for the marconi combo can be found here:
http://www.marconisa.co.za/premium_combo_software_download.htm

I think if you fiddle around you should be able to find the info... Should be there SOMEWHERE...

Thanks Lycanthrope

Is it worth it for me to install the update or should I just go out there and by a better router?

If you reckon I should get a new one, what do you recommend?

*points at fz1* Well, I've just been talked into getting a new router myself - in the end, any router is better than a marconi router. I had a lot of trouble with my marconi - everything from the wifi to forwarding ports on the thing.

I'm actually quite smitten with the idea of the Netgear DG834GT which fz1 & Dazzla suggested. fz1 quite obviously seems to know what he's talking about, so I'm willing to trust him. It also has a lot of nice features which marconi routers don't. UPnP for one :p

If you'd like to do a firmware update, it'll be mostly painless. Although you may have to set up your wifi again. I'd say that it's generally up to you :D

I like that netgear router, problem is that I don't need the wireless functionality. I have two Apple airport Expresses around my house that are working great.

@fz1 is there a version like that without the wireless capability, it would just be a wast for me to spend more when I dont need to.

+1. There's no harm in installing the firmware update. The only thing you need to be wary of is that if you don't follow instructions carefully or interrupt the firmware update process, you can 'brick' your router. Who knows, you may just get bug fixes and improvements in performance (which is what firmware updates are about) by doing the update.

Yup, there is: http://www.netgear.co.uk/wired_broadband_router_dg834.php Digital Planet has it: http://www.digitalplanet.co.za/p-59...all-router-w4-port-10100-mbps-lan-switch.aspx

As I said to Lycanthrope though, you need to think carefully about what your feature requirements are, budget, availability, etc. There may be better (for example cheaper) options out there for you since it seems that all you want is a modem. As an example: http://www.netgear.co.uk/adsl_ethernet_modem_dm111p.php which is only R315 (did a quick search, not sure of how reputable this online seller is...): http://www.zaps.co.za/?pid=5999

Thanks for the help, you are right all I need is a router really. I'll have a look at the one you pointed me to for R315.

On another note I will NEVER buy anything from digitalplanet as I experienced the worst server ever there with my first purchase attempt.

Do you like that one for R315?

DP has been good to me. Sometimes their service can leave a little to be desired, but usually I have no issues and get exactly what I need pretty quickly.

I'm partial to Netgear products because I think they are quite good. So, yes. However, there is no harm in doing research into alternatives. Maybe even walk into an Incredible Corruption and see what they have available. Good luck.

Hi gambithunt,
I would like to hear your feedback of what happened with your first purchase. We have done some really great improvements at Digital Planet and we have received more compliments over the last few months than complaints. This is really great news and it shows that our new processes are working.:)

I would however still like to hear your feedback so that I can avoid it happening in the future. You can reply to this thread or alternatively email me directly on [email protected].

Thanks and Regards,
Karyn

Where to start

I ordered a simple little pc fan.

I received confirmation of the order saying that delivery would be 5 - 7 days.

3 weeks later I had not received anything nor heard anything from you. I emailed your support and got a reply from Pona telling me that only just then she had emailed your suppliers and they had no idea on the eta of the fan I ordered.

I then had no replies or feedback for a week.

Then almost a month later I email again and this time Ornella gets back to me telling me your suppliers do not have stock, ONE WHOLE MONTH LATER.

I asked for a refund which took another two weeks.

lol, it took over a month to conclude something that should have taken less than a week and if you do not have stock of a particular item why do you allow people to order it and pay for it on your site. Why does it take over a month to realise that the supplier had no stock? I ordered from you because of the convenience of having the product in less than a week without the hassle of having to go to the shops myself. As we can all see, I did nothing but cause myself hassle.

Apart from that every time I de-register from your spam mail I get a confirmation that it will not longer be sent to me, only to receive it again and again.

Rant over and I'm sorry for kinda hijacking this thread.

@ gambithunt - It wasn't you who hijacked the thread :p And don't worry about it. I like finding that warm fuzzy feeling of reassurance in why I stick to my favourite online stores :D

A while back I bought an expansion for a game from WantItAll, 3 weeks later (after they found my money in their bank accounts) when it arrived, it was in a tiny bubblewrap envelope with a scratched disc inside, with the game's serial number celotaped onto it. It was the last time I spent money at that place.

@ World - I sent in a fault logging to Telkom yesterday regarding my little download/latency issue. I also e-mailed one guy who works at Telkom who was ever so kind as to order my DSL or me, change my billing address, and - best part - be human. He - obviously - also gave me his e-mail address, so I tend to mail him every now and then if I have trouble. So, hopefully, at some point in the future, they'll check if it's the exchange, the copper, or me.

Better safe than sorry, right?

Thanks Lycanthrpe ;)

I hope you get your issues sorted with your line.
