Hi,

I recently upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 8.1 Release Preview (here it didn't keep any settings, programs - just personal files).

I downloaded Steam and now after downloading, it updates itself. The problem is, it keeps failing when I update, saying it needs to be online to update, but I am connected to the Internet and my cap is far from being depleted.

What could be causing the issue, what else could I try?

Thanks.

Yes, this is a fairly common problem recently, I had this on windows 7.

I solved it by downloading the installer from steam and reinstalling steam, another thing is do delete all steam files except the game data. Steam support has a topic on this with instructions.

I use 8.1 and Steam with no issues.

What did you base you response on?

The fact that it's a preview and not the final 8.1, there's bound to be numerous issues that pop up that wouldn't otherwise, but then again if it works on your PC it must work for every PC without an issue.

Never said that it would work on every PC. Just disputing your assumption that it had to be windows 8.

Maybe the fact you're running Windows 8.1 and it's buggy?

Agreed, it's a preview it's not meant to be used as your primary OS.

One word of warning before you proceed, however. The Windows 8.1 preview is essentially a beta of the new OS and is by no means a finished or polished version. Therefore, you shouldn't update to Windows 8.1 on your main or only PC. Instead, reserve the update for a spare or non-essential device outfitted with Windows 8.

I too had this issue a couple weeks ago with a 60mb update also on Win7... took a couple hours of manually closing the error and re-opening Steam to redownload the update each time. Thanks for the fix to try next time it happens :)

In your steam folder delete ClientRegistry.blob and reopen steam, see if that works.

Open Internet Explorer, press Alt, click on File and make sure "Work Offline" is not ticked.
