The even more obvious question is why aren't we warning all the other tourists that come here all the time? Surely they too deserve a fair warning. What's so special about the WC tourists? CT was full of English tourists in December and nary a myKKK banner warning of the imminent muggings, rapes & murders. That's so unfair

Some people are genuinely concerned, some are on the usual bleep and use the "concerned" front, some are here due to all the media hype due to the WC being as big as it is, and some inbetween. The cricket had less hype and attracted a smaller less sudden influx of tourists as the WC will, so it's probably not a good comparison.
It's ludicrous to apply SA crime stats to tourists, aswell as most people living in areas that tourists would tend to go. I'm sure the townships might be unsafe to to the nature of a township, but we have proof that tourists are safe in the millions of tours that have been conducted on a daily basis to SA townships.

Not so much in the decent areas. And in SA, even lower-middle class is decent!

Where do you think criminals live? They live amongst us (draw energy from us
). They are our neighbours, they use safe houses in our midst! They rent that upmarket apartment next to yours with the meth labs and what not.
Crime is not only a localised problem and neighbourhood watch programs have been successful around the world.Why is there this attitude that SA's should solve the crime problem? Out of curiosity just how far are you willing to let the government go to fight crime? Happy to be subjected to spot searches? Have all your phone calls monitored? How about a curfew to make sure you're tucked up safe and sound at night while the army patrols the streets and just shoot people on sight?
If your children grow up without a proper education are you going to blame the teachers or yourself for not doing anything about it?

Ok so how do you propose we stop hijackings, murders, rapes? How do we fix the court system and make sure the bad guys stay in jail? How do we fix corruption? Please i would love to know how to fix the fundamental problems which lead to high crimes rates? Prevention is better than cure and if the government and police did their jobs crime would go down.
Bwana as i have mentioned if the government stopped letting criminals run riot we would be better off. The problem with crime is the ease at which it can be done and the ease of getting away with it. When you have a bad corruption problem within the government/police criminals will run riot.
Where in the world has it been succesful bwana? what country?

We must make it hard for the criminals to live in our midst - that's a very good start.
You are quite happy to pay that spot fine so you can get off the hook with the metro police. That same metro cop is then happy to take something on the side when he arrives at the scene of a bank robbery in the middle of the night. What's the difference between your spot fine and someone handing him a bigger splodge of wanga?

Yes it must get done right, problem is neither the policing nor the justice system do it right and then they make us feel like we should do more to prevent crime. It's a bloody joke in my opinion.
Just the fundamental basics. Lead by example clamping down corruption and blue light convoys, appointing officers on merit not representation, adequate training and funding for the cops, putting the rights of the innocent above that of the criminals etc.
Seems to some that is too much to ask of the government.
Seems also I'm the only one concerned about South Africans who unlike the tourists during the WC are going to be the victims. While money and effort is wasted on a football tournament these people are for certain going to be robbed, raped, hijacked and assaulted by the thousands. How many victims during the course of the WC 20 000+.
It's ironic how during the early days of apartheid trouble and pressure was put on kicking South Africa out of international sport. Many scoffed about these constantly whining negative individuals pissing on their parade. Now the shoe is on the other foot. Now they scoff at those who are negative about the millions of South Africans who are victims of crimes and impoverishment.

I do. I'm in the security business. Although maybe not for much longer thanks to government racial discrimination and incompetence. What do you do towards combating crime?

Alan there is nothing we can do man, as you and i pointed out the fundamentals need to be sorted out before anything can be done. You need to stop crime not prevent it and as you say while the tourists will get protection the citizens of this country get nothing but a big F you and you sort out the crime.
Here? There's surprisingly little to do actually because the community already cares.
Apart from the SAPS branch there is a local security company that responds to calls from anyone, clients or not so we support them. We keep an eye on our neighbours houses because its what neighbours do. If someone looks out of place we let them know people are watching.
There has been talk of setting up a watch programme and I'll be first in line to do my part, again.

Bwana in my street it is rather busy in terms of cars and people, how do i know who is out of place if let's say 30 people walk past and 300 cars drive past a day? How do i select out of all those who is watching houses and who is going about their daily business?
