SWC in SA a "BIG MISTAKE"!

Telling them not to come is silly without a doubt but denying the problem is just as bad.

Ronjay the difference between not safe and our country is that in the UK london is not safe in as much as you may get robbed, here not safe means murder, rape and that type of thing. I have no problems with crime, i do have a problem with the violent nature of our crime :(.

Actually, I have a very big problem with crime, in any form. Violent or not. criminals are the bane of society. My problem here is that people are saying they must warn tourists not to come to SA because they are going to get raped and murdered. All the while, completely ignoring statistics that show tourists are not effected by crime as much as they would like to believe. This smacks of an ulterior motive, like wanting to see SA fail. The facts are being completely ignored in favor of scare mongering. Shame on those that would put the lively hoods of so many in jeopardy for such a selfish reason. And believe me SA does not hold a monopoly on murder or rape. Have you ever watched crime series on TV? Do you think they sucked those stories out of their thumb.

I'm sure I can pull together some stats which will indicate the South Africa have a big crime problem;)

Denying that we have a crime problem is not helpful.

Making up your own stats wont help you:D (just kidding)

Again, I have not read any post where anyone denies that we do have a crime problem. We all acknowledge it.

But to use it as an excuse to predict a SWC fail and to publically chase away tourist is malicious.

EDIT: And this is my last post in this thread. Promise!

No, don't go away. We need all the sane people to remain here:D

Please go ahead. I really hate having to do all the research myself. But bear in mind it must be crime on tourists as that is what this thread is about.

How can you expect tourist to enjoy them self here if there are murder (50 a day), rape and robberies all around them?

Yip, but they obviously don't care that tourism is a big part of our economy, That many people depend on tourists for a living and that tourism is considered to be a big growth area that will provide jobs for currently unemployed individuals. I wish they would wake up and smell the coffee, they could hurt our economy if tourists start to stay away because of there doom BS. But of course they don't care about others in our country that are in the tourism industry. They think that their wallets wont be affected if there is no tourists because they them selves are not in the tourist trade, but obviously tourists bring a lot of money with them, so less money in the country affects us all, they just can't see this.

So you would rather have more money and more dead tourists as opposed to less money and less dead tourists.. Is that your idea of a moral high ground? Withdrawn. No further questions..

Here you go:http://www.saps.gov.za/statistics/reports/crimestats/2009/categories.htm

Do you expect the tourist to come to a country like that?

Tourist should actually not come to an abnormal society like that.

@Lancelot - you are 100% correct. These stats do not differentiate between tourists and SA citizens and illegal "citizens".

You do know that only 139 British tourists out of 460 000 had problems in the previous tourist season. Oh wait, you don't believe in hard data compiled by the British government. Scare mongering only works on the uninformed.

Lance, that is what you said, but I say you must look at the total picture.

Imagine you go to a country for a weeks holiday and you find out that 350 people was murder during the same time , would you enjoy yourself?

I agree but according to a few articles quoted by me this has not been an issue before. I posted a link to the Barmy Army encouraging people to come out for the SWC after spending 40 days here for the cricket. Then there was the cricket world cup article that showed a study as saying "foreigners were generally very satisfied with the event and South Africa. Crime reported was at insignificant levels. 3% of visitors experienced an incident of crime whilst here. However, 99% of visitors (94% of those affected) said they would return again." With even 94% of those affected by crime saying they'd return.

It's interesting to note that the Barmy Army encouraged visitors because I definitely heard on the radio that the Barmy Army were not going to come to the SWC because of costs. Of course he'd probably be talking to people who could afford the SWC. Because as far as I could make out, this visit to SA cost much less, despite going to many more matches and staying for a longer time. Then again, we must remember that these tourists probably stay in luxurious hotels where the threat is extremely low. Also they'd visit the V&A Waterfront, various wine farms that us normal folk only go to once or twice a year. I'll be honest, I feel quite safe at those locations - in fact I'd stay at the wine farms the whole year if I could afford it :) . Beautiful views of Stellenbosch and eating good food :) But my concern, as Alan has already pointed out is that why can't SA do this all the time? It's all good and well to do when the international spotlight is on you, but what about the hard-working tax-paying citizens? :(

The bigger picture is that we have many tourists coming here everyday, and they have been coming here for a very long time. I didn't hear people warning them to stay away then. Only now, so what has changed?

Yes but those that are telling tourists not to come to SA are not talking about citizens are they?

I do not agree, the bigger picture is that we have a major crime problem. Solve that and most people will encourage tourist to come to this beautiful country.

As I said before, people want to use the WC to get out their message and I can not see anything wrong with that.

Even if the message is a lie? We do have a big problem with crime, yes. But tourists are not being affected by it. Yes we have murders, rape armed robbery etc, but the stats show that tourists are not involved in this. So telling people not to come to SA because they will be murdered, raped is a lie. You will need concrete proof that tourists are being actively looked for by criminals to do these things for it to be true. The stats are pointing to the opposite.

I am very glad that the tourists aren't getting raped and murdered like the rest of us, Lance. It must be the work of the stab proof vests and other anti crime devices that they wear.
