Telkom 1TB Feedback Thread

I suspect this will put quite a bit of strain on the network.

My uncapped LTE speeds steadily continues to drop little by little  Not sure if it's because of this but not fun to go from average 50mbit to 15mbit in a matter of 2 weeks.

Do you live around folks who can afford to spend a grand month on the internet (above the other costs like for mobile) ? The answer to that will tell you if this deal will or is causing you strain.

I live in an area where ADSL is limited to 2Mbit with no Fibre, so pretty much the entire neighborhood is on some sort of fixed wireless or LTE :)

We'll see what happens in the next month or 2 regarding speed

Still working well here. Foul weather in East Rand for a big chunk of the day. Despite that, this is the result a few mins ago.

And another few mins later while casting DSTV Now to Chromecast.

My usual 20ish mb at this time :( weird since im from a small town wouldnt expect congestion here... On a positive getting 85mb on mtn so if they ever release a month to month on their 1tb I'll switch to that.

Sounds like they do have a month-to-month on their 1TB, it's just that you're forced to buy a router from them cash.

Even then, your speeds are very usable.

Not sure if asked before, will the b525 router work with this and what speeds can I expect with it?

B525-65a will work a charm. Not sure of other B525 dericiatives. Check the exact model you have. If it supports band 3 and band 40 you'll be fine.

If it supports only one of the two (likely B3) then you may be fine but may not get the best speeds necessarily.

At the office we have the B618s-22d which only supports B3 (1800Mhz) and we still get 50-70Mbps but was not performing as wrll today in the bad weather for some reason.

My folks upgraded to this deal on month to month last week Sunday. They were migrated to LTE when ADSL was removed last November. Telkom upgraded them instantly in store but were trying to sell them the contract. I told them to go month to month because fibre has been recently installed. However, the FNO is Vodacom, currently they did not open access.

They said that they get an average of 15/5 during the day, 5/3 during 6pm-10pm and 35/10 from 10pm-9am on both the D-Link DWR-956M/TK and the B315s-22. Telkom told them the area is not congested.

Do y'all think they could get better speeds with a better router? If so, what are your suggestions?

That router does not support 2300Mhz. If you have a flagship smartphone in the family try the sim in the phone and see if there's a difference (or any device that supports 1800Mhz and 2300Mhz).

Bear in mind routers may have better performances to phones, especially on latency.

B525-65a or B618-65 or B818-263 (the latter being the replacement for B618. Don't think the B525 is a current device either. I believe it was replaced with the B535, but you need to check the specific model as there are variations and the variations are generally in the frequencies supported.

For example, I notice when I perform a speedtest with my router it is on 2300Mhz and I achieve 70-130Mbps depending on time of day, weather, congestion or whatnot. When it starts uploading it always goes to 1800Mhz.

Thanks for this. Will definitely pass this on.

Yes, don't agree either.
I would definitely buy this if I could, but financially I can't at this time.
I'm not an online gamer and this would be perfect for streaming services.
DSTV Now chows into my data.
With this it would be perfect.

dstv now chows about 1gb an hr on the highest setting

so even if you watch all day you wont be close to 1tb of data

people who download games will get close to 1tb not people who stream and use the net

It sounds like you are arguing with me, while we are saying the same thing?
Or are you verifying what I said?
Weird post to wake up to.... :p

Anyone able to share data 1GB/day upto 10GB/number on the month to month?

Yes. I usually donate 2 gig to my prepaid sim card and the rest to anyone who wants data. it gets tiring to transfer 1gig daily

Can you tell me the process please?
I've tried ussd and the telkom app..

I think the sim card that you are transferring to must have the tariff set to smartbroadband wireless prepaid (if it is prepaid) or it must be another data sim, then it will be able to receive the donated data. To transfer, I have used the telkom app and the website.

Thanks, mine doesn't allow me to the area where it asks for a number.

Well I just got my 1TB deal yesterday

And I’ve been happy with the speeds

Getting around 20mb-30mb peak time with uploads 5-10mb

During the day it’s 30-40mb with around the same uploads

Night time was great getting 40-50mb and uploads of 10mb

Which is impressive since everyone is using some form of LTE as there isn’t an alternative
