You give up too easily.

Ask for a port swop. They can move somebody with a 2Mbps service off that DSLAM/IMAX to your port and give you the faster port.

PM TelkomZA and ask them to check ALL the DSLAMs in your exchange for the possibility of doing the above.
 
Me battle weary and have ADSL scars too.

I am currently on up to 10Mbps line, used to sync at just under 8Mbps, since last week line sync is anything from 3Mbps to 5.5Mpbs on any given day.
TelkomZA (very friendly and helpful chap he be) has been PM'd and it seems that only in September will the upgrades in this area be lighting up, so not too many sleeps for a better connection.
I can wait another month or two... and dream of 10Mbps/20Mbps options while Telkom upgrades.

My line is is a bundled thingy with Afrihost... would they be the ones to approach for a port swap?

Did not know that this could be done...

A Telkom techie came to my house the other day cause we were not syncing at 10Mbps where we used to. (Well almost). He told me if we can hold our breath until about September, our boxes will be updated to the new MSAN. Then we should be able to get VDSL. He also mentioned possibility of 100Mbps fiber cause the fiber is already by us, they just need to upgrade the equipment. Lets see if he was telling the truth!

So I was a bit to quick for their system it would seem. Afrihost phoned said I cannot upgrade to 20mb and they checked the exchange. I phoned Telkom. Telkom says yes it is 20mb capable...So I have to switch back to telkom and they can then upgrade me..what a mission...

Mine also says 20Mbps available now. It was 10Mbps before although I have been connected at 4Mbps for some time now.
Cape Town, Southern Suburbs.

Using a Normal ADSL2+ Modem on a VDSL Line

This seems to be the best thread to ask this on. I would appreciate some comments on this from people with some experience in this :

As Soon as I read the article that 20Mbps ADSl have been released, I immediately checked and to my surprise both my home and work are eligible for the upgrade. I upgraded both as soon as I could. I verified with my ISP (Webafrica) that the modem I have (Tenda 300D) will work on the 20Mbps and then the following:

A couple of hours after upgrading my house line to 20Mbps, my ADSl Modem Synced at 20479 down and 1019 Up.

SNR Tolerance（db） 12.9 Up 8.0 Down
Attenuation（db） 21.0 Up 13.3 Down

I then did a speed test and the Line was still testing at 9.8Mbps. I contacted my ISP Again trying to get answers and got the following reply about an hour ago:

The package it self is scheduled for upgrade on to 20Mbps VDSL on the 01/08/2014.

In the back end your line has been upgraded to the 20Mbps but on the front end of your account your package reflects still on 10Mbps as the package has to still change.

Wil an VDSL Modem have any advantage to me over the normal ADSL Modem?
The cheapest one I can find is a ZyXEL for R873 from Webantics: http://www.webantics.co.za/viewItem.aspx?idProduct=18991
The first Computer shop I called locally here in Somerset-West, Computer Mania, Does not even have an idea of what VDSL is, let alone sell the modems, Incredible will be too expensive if they have and Dion Wired the Same.

And at a flat rate that is cheap and free for schools, libraries etc. Then you will have things like communication (voice calls/skype type services) and education sorted. After that is peachy, you can start to work on 50 bajillion meg speeds, ok?

If you upgrade the exchanges to be able to handle 100mbps, it will automatically result in you having stable 2/4mbps.
Same price to upgrade the infrastructure as to replace it. Might actually be cheaper to upgrade, since telkom is only in it for profits.

That you can sync at vdsl? Vdsl will allow you to get 20/2, while adsl only allows 19/1.

Edit: just googled, adsl routers not compatible with vdsl lines according to: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r16533907-ADSL-modem-on-VDSL-line
I found no mention when googling of adsl routers being used on vdsl lines. You can always try it out and if it doesn't work get a new one.

My VDSL router has a VDSL/ADSL mode, so works if I have Telkom set me to VDSL or if I went back down to ADSL. If your line is on VDSL, an ADSL router won't sync. Got to do with the modulation types I think?

Don't think there'd be any other advantage of a VDSL router though.

Try with a capped account from another provider to verify whether it is WA or not.
 
I just spoke to a Telkom Consultant and they know NOTHING about this. They advised that my exchange supports up to 40mbps but the consultant is adamant that you have to get a new VDSL modem to get 20mbps. I also spoke to my ISP (Afrihost) and they too are unaware of this.

Your exchange is VDSL enabled. Probably means there are no more DSLAMs physically there.

Hence you cannot get the ADSL 20Mbps product, which is a workaround for those of us not on VDSL.

That sucks. I guess I'll have to get a VDSL modem in order to upgrade. Is there anything better than the Telkom Pace modem?
 
Hallo,

I recently upgraded my adsl line from 10Mbps to 20Mbps vdsl. My normal modem synced on 20Mbps but the internet was still on 10Mbps, so I upgraded to a VDSL Modem, the Zyxel Wifi one, still exactly the same problem. My ISP Webafrica cannot sort the problem out as yet. Spent 3 Hours last night trying various configurations. Stuck on 10Mbps. Spent R2000 sofar including the modem and line upgrade and still have nothing to show for it.

I read somewhere that the line is not on a vdsl port at the exchange if this happens.

I have sent this info to telkomza also. Just need to see if anyone else has this issue.

How do you know you're still on 10Mbps hardusb?
We've just been upgraded to 20mbps. The modem (ADSL 2+) is syncing at 18mbps and I'm getting these speeds on Afrihost capped account:

I suspect it's just a congested exchange or AH.
