Telkom 8 Mbps ADSL trial

And the small cap, RPM? Did they say anything about that?

Hehe don't think they'll be adjusting that soon.

While they're testing, they're wanting to people to chow through GB's and still pay through their teeth for it :p

Meh... I bet in 5years time they'll be testing 30mb/s and i STILL WONT HAVE dsl in my area. There should be a special place in hell reserved for these bastards

Another: Gary "I told you so":D
Gary please pm the lotto numbers, plseeease. I really need them:p
Well, unfortunately I must dump my 4Mb line for 384 now, so I will loose out, unless fortunes change.:(
Unfortunately no mention about speeds other than 4Mb to 8Mb?

keep the good news coming lol, anyone think they'll bump up the upload speeds?

I just logged into my dlink router after reading this post to see if I've had any changes... no luck as to the 8Mbps upgrade... However, I did notice the following:

Mode: ADSL2+
....
Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 19.9 20.2
Attenuation (dB): 29.0 13.0
Output Power (dBm): -1.7 0.0
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 18252 1212
Rate (Kbps): 4095 507

I'm not sure whether it used to say ADSL2+, but it definitely DIDN'T say 18252 and 1212 in the attainable rate section, it used to say 8192 or a number in the 8xxx region. Would this suggest some changes to the exchange, or am I just reading too much into my router's stats?!

Nick

so 3gigs on an 8meg line will get blown how quick?

I hope they scrap 384k altogether.

My 4mb line only syncs at 2mb, wonder how/if we'll get anything close to 8

Ja they have been doing this since the beginning of the year, (most) of the DSLAMs are too old for ADSL2+ syncing, and those puppies are expensive to replace with newer ones, I suggest Telkom don't bother spending any money on buying new ones, it would only be a waste. Its not only the DSLAMs, but the copper infrastructure as well, the current wave or routers (Billion) will struggle too much to sync at those sort of frequencies.

Copper needs to be replaced with fiber, that will take a while.

that and the fact that some exchanges still only support 512.

and the lines in our area are so vrot that 512 is unstable too.

but go ahead telkom - if you can get those okes in Sandton City up to 8mbs you can start claiming "up to 8mb" on your paper-wasting leaflets stuffed into everyone's invoices.

The only real attainable next generation network would be feasable if all infrastructure carrying data was done so over fiber and super efficient and broad wireless ONLY. It would take Years and massive investments, I very much doubt Telkom will risk their status quo in exchange for moving forward!

does this trial only upgrade 4mb users?
I thought they were suppose to upgrade 384 users to 1mb
seems like I'm still on 384 :(

They have already established 4mbps, boosting a 384 to 1/4mb would be pointless when you are testing for the maximum possible throughput dude, sorry :(

improved speed with all the old restrictions, nice.

I think it's about time for them to upgrade the 384 & 512 connections ;)

Balance out the field, if indeed it's bandwidth they want consumed upgrade the line speed....

384 & 512 are a joke of an excuse for broadband.....

My money is 4meg will get upgraded. They can charge even more then...

But yea.. good luck with the 8Mbps line and 5-20Gig cap.
