Telkom 8 Mbps ADSL trial

hopefully uncapped accounts will be able to achieve an 8MB speed. That would make it double worth it ;)

What attainable rates are being shown on the trial users' routers?

Im getting
Attainable Rate (Kbps): down: 6848 up: 1056
Rate (Kbps): down: 4096 up: 511 (Im currently on my web africa trial account which is due to end today)

And then do you have to be on a SAIX account to be on the 8mb trial?

doesn't matter if you have a SAIX/IS/WA account. your line is separate from your cap

Still sitting with an 8mbps line and as nice as it is do DL at 700K+ my poor cap is suffering, I would take the lower speeds for much cheaper bandwidth tbh...

Cool to be linked to in an article though :P

I can use my 5gb in 2 days instead of 4 now!

Customer service where you need it most on a broadband offering!

I thought their goal was to bring broadband to Southern Africa ??

Are you serious???
I live in a new complex with +- 240 possible users, Telkom have suspended the project, as every possible resource is now going to the %^*#@ World Cup.
All they are trying to show to the rest of the world is "we want to be a first world county, that can supply the infrastructure to everybody in SA, and Southern Africa". BS!!!!!

I am over Telokm. They can go do funny stuff with themselves!!!!

Cool 8mb speeds Finally!
Now uncapped would be double the price for the speed and roling threshoulds would still throttle at 10GB's

Love the speed hate the caps........

Hehe i can see all 4meg subcribers in 5 years time going @ 15mbs and 80% of the country is still on 384kbs.

With telkom you either crawl of fly, no in-between.

384k should be downgraded to 128k to make more space for us 8mbs users ;)

Having had both 4 meg and 384 I can honestly say .. that unless you downloading something .. the difference is not that big.. sure.. its nice to see a 700mb file (read movie ;) ) coming down in 25 minutes .... but for normal browsing ... unless you watching youtube vids .. the difference is only marginal.

With that said .. I do feel the upload speed of 384 could do with a bump .. for VPN or hosting your own website for kicks .. but to be brutally honest .. Id be very happy with a bump to 512 for the 384 users .. a small speed increase .. and a nice size upload speed increase .. would make the service perfect for me .. provided of course they dont just drop the 384 product and keep the 512 product at the same price .. in which case .. ADSL would become too expensive for me, and Id have to suffer a smaller cap and switch to 3g.

I just logged into my dlink router after reading this post to see if I've had any changes... no luck as to the 8Mbps upgrade... However, I did notice the following:

I'm not sure whether it used to say ADSL2+, but it definitely DIDN'T say 18252 and 1212 in the attainable rate section, it used to say 8192 or a number in the 8xxx region. Would this suggest some changes to the exchange, or am I just reading too much into my router's stats?!

Nick
Nick, I think your router used to say G.DMT instead of ADSL2+.

Can any1 who gets upgraded please tell us the area you live in.

Our DSLAM (Parow 4, I think; number starts with 939) was upgraded to ADSL2+ yesterday. This morning I saw an attainable downlink rate of about 22Mbit, uplink 2Mbit. Line is still not working, however, and the line synced at 384/127.

That sounds like a good idea. Their wasted cap should also be offered to us bandwidth hogs.
"We have 1054 users that only used 35% of their 1GB Cap. You can use their additional bandwidth."

I have a friend with a 3GB account on a 384 line, he uses 500MB in a month... rather get dial-up, its cheaper :D

My internet at home and also at work ( got 3 lines at work ) thy all down from about yesterday 1pm and still its down. Hope thy giving us that 8mb line :)

And yes i am also from Parow

try sharing the line with another person; the 348k is cool when both parties play just online, but when the other person starts browsing you get increased lag in game up to the point where it is really bothersome. that's one of the reasons why i went over to 4 meg.

Oi! I choose 384 out of principle.
1) I refuse to pay more just to get a higher speed, it's extortion.
2) The line hardly stays up so paying for 4Mb would be a waste.

For gigs I use prepaid accounts.
