hi all

after I read this thread,

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=161157&highlight=trial

I got really excited, but wasnt sure to believe it or not so I made a call. I didnt wanna post until I had hard facts, and he got back to me today, so here they are... you NOT gonna like them though.

Telkom WERE looking seriously at the 8Mbps ADSL option. The latest is that is has been decided to scrap this entirely, as it was simple not a viable option for them for various reasons. They rather want to focus on their 3G development. I also did confirm that 384 will be phased out, and will be bumped up to 512. That is all, there will be no other changes from what he said.

He is pretty high up, and has been with Telkom for many years so I trust this info as credible...

Yeah I know it sucks, but its better than false hope! :D

Oh well... hopefully they will then bump up the 512k to a megabit and i will happily downgrade my 4mb line...

Thats what I said in another thread - but no - he's info is "credible" too.
This makes more sense, than 8Mbps network that cant work.

Yea I'm paying for a 4MB line but my line won't sync at those speeds so if I can get 1MB with the 512 upload I'll be happy.

This doesn't surprise me at all with how degraded the copper networks are. Im also quite happy with 4mbit its just that rubbish cap we need bumped up.
What about plans with fiber and ADSL2+ ?

Im sure you guys have seen those recent telkom ads on TV for the world cup about "this is what happens when too many people try to access the itnernet at once...."

No offense, but who are your sources? without a proper statement from telkom its all hearsay, further more has there even been a statement stating that telkom are even trialing 8mbp, its all these 'i know this guy who is'.

384 and 512 are currently way out of proportion cost wise. For 8KB/sec more you are paying a huge premium. Once 384 is scrapped, things will make more sense. But the 4 Meg price must become the 512 price and 512 must become the 384 price.

I second the notion that 8 Meg is useless to almost everyone anyway, so not really a big deal.

Can you EVER trust something that comes out of the Telkom PR stable?

@ semaphore

dude, im not someone who is gonna make up crap for the sake of it. if I wanted to do that I wouldnt have waited, I would have just posted my crap right away! :D

Like I said in my post. I have a credible source, who is in constant contact with head office in joburg. I dont think he will be too pleased if I posted him name on this forum...

@ Gaz

yeah I guess thats why they getting rid of the 384 service! As for the prices, I did not ask him this coz I know its not his area, he is more in the tech side of things and I dont wanna annoy him with irrelevant questions :D

Oh ok, because you say so and your 'credible' source says so ill believe you like a lemming, i dont care about the 8mbps either way. but time will tell.i highly doubt telkom will just hand in the towel on a possible financial gain from all the companies wanting 8mbp and raping there pockets for the line.

@kingrob

unlike everyone here i dont have the inherited hatred for this company, they have done nothing to me, i have adsl and yes there have been hick ups with it, and that was last year when i just got it installed, and now my line works perfectly no issues. I have more issues with the ISP's than i do with the line itself.

thats the thing... one of the drawbacks was that it was NOT a good financial option for Telkom. Im not sure exactly how that works to be honest, but thats what he said... so ya...

:)

looks like we will more than likely see line rental/phone call price increases later in the year so telskum can reach their profit quota. Ask your tech friend if uncapped local will be back or larger caps :)

Well, If a DSLAM has 600 ports, 50% 4 Meg and 50% 512/384, then they need to install, say, a 86.4 Meg backhaul at 16:1. But if those 4 Megs were 8 Megs, they would need a 170 Meg backhaul.

Double the cost for what financial benefit? The money comes from the ISP accounts, not the access speed.

Hmmm, this is a prickly issue. If this is all true, then Telkom will definitely lose out on potential and current clients if they stagnate in this market. ADSL is an attraction because of its speed and low latency. But if Telkom is simply going to maintain the existing speeds, some customers may leave for faster pastures.

I suspect the copper network has a lot to do with this decision. Its aging copper network is expensive to maintain and replace. I can't imagine Telkom does not have a strategy in place for this.

I believe they will either try to push customers to higher speed wireless services (those who don't mind the latency), or they will look at running fibre in the high density areas for those who demand low latency.

Hmm, maybe someone should tell him the head office is in Pretoria, not JHB. Then there is the NNOC in Centurion.

It's going to go from 0384 to 0512?
Yay! Not!

So, I go from 0384 to 0512 while my overseas counterparts are on 8000.

Oh, I'm so grateful.
Riiiiiiiiight
