Telkom 8 Mbps out the window

As awesome as 8mbit sounds it will just lead to that rubbish 3gig cap getting killed twice as fast so its pointless really.What we really need in S.A is just more cheaper bandwidth to us consumers and eliminating that 385k rubbish and bump people up to atleast 1mbit. 24mbit uncapped on the other hand is epic! I use to stream tv shows and movies like you wouldnt believe *sigh*.
I think our main concern should be what are this years price adjustments going to be like this year? im going for another increase as i stated before
 
Wireless only work for those with coverage....wired solutions got their place in the equation. Unfortunately it will take years to re-wire 'last mile connections' with fiber, this is why wireless is so en-vogue. Cheaper and quicker to roll out, backhaul seems to be the limiting factor in this case that's why you never get the promised speeds as advertised.
 
Well there always LLU ... it will come sometime.

Unlike Telkom with it's one size fits all strategy (if we can't support 8Mbps everywhere, we wont do it), its likely alternate operators will provide higher speeds to differentiate themselves, even if only a smallish subset of their customers can take advantage (those close to the exchanges). The advantage the alternates would have is much newer/more modern/cost effective DSLAM equipment (ADSL2+ & VDSL2 capable) compared to Telkom.

Probably only happen (be financially viable) in the really dense metro areas though.

No trial or anything. Moved to a new place (about 4-5 year old flats) asked for the Do 1 package and was plesently surprised when my router tells me im synced at 8 Meg. Dont get me wrong im still running at 384 speeds but im synced at 8 Meg.

that doesn't sound right, some routers can tell you the maximum sync obtainable on your line, are you sure you're not looking at that?? its fairly rare to sync at 8mb and only get 384 speeds (it has happend, think of the 4mb/512 speed problem, but it is rare)

Id love 8mb/s and more, 24mb/50mb/100mb BRING IT!!!, "Too Fast" or "knowone has use for that sorta speed", bollocks, what about film companies and photographic agencies that move huge portfolios around for clients and send batches of images and footage for editing and retouching?, 4mb/s is not enough its bloody poor and takes forever, Telkom are fekken useless and always will be, it was just too much hard work so just chuck it, it wouldnt suprise me if they switch back to analogue tv transmission after the world cup :P

We all hear things, i spoke to the internet techie at telkom when they were fixing my dsl, was down for a week or so. Well anyway, we were having a discussion on the phone to pass time while he was testing my line, and putting me back on the 4MB/s line... Some where in there the 8mb line popped up, and he said and i quote... "we(as telkom) has just completed the 8mb line trail and it was successful, and should be available around june or so.." he and i agreed we were waiting patiently for the line.

Yes he did not confirm exact dates, but can you blame the guy if he did telkom would kick his ASS, he did same around about that time we should see line upgrades as for it not being viable, telkom wouldn't back ot of that cause they are currently advertising that there Internet solution (whiich i take as adsl) will be ready for the 2010 world cup.. bearing in mind that solution should be live this year to test to see if it stable and working correctly.

Also i read somewhere in this thread, they are going to or want to change there adsl customers to there mobile network, i doubt that going to go well as it just going to cause massive overhaul on the wireless network... and at the moment wireless data fees are exceeding fixed land line solutions.

Either telkom steps up with thier game, or the new neotel, mtn, vodacom fibre network going to be the next best thing... I am already considering the change if the rumours or facts about telkom keep having a negative outlook.

And i just defended telkom, i going to hell guys

There seems to be quite a few opinions at Telkom. I spoke to a Telkom techie today who I have dealt with a few times and he said Telkom is looking to launch 8mbps lines from around June/July (Seacom time). This is obviously in contrast to HTC's source who is also from Telkom. I guess all we can do is wait and see as clearly Telkom doesn't even know...

I took my source as trustworthy (which apparently was a serious mistake) , and further proves to me that Telkom dont know what the bloody hell they are doing. How can someone who works for Telkom (Im NOT talking tech level here, high end level) not know what the hell is going on right under his nose. Is Telkom that poorly managed and run that testing/implementation project info is split into multiple stories... in some cases, the right hand having NO CLUE what the left hand is doing!?

Perhaps they tell as many people as possible different stories to confuse as many people as possible, so if/when they do fail they dont have to produce any kind of product... They can just say, "well those were rumours"

Before you do that.

It s common practice for companies to sow confusion with regard to launching products. It keeps competitors guessing.

He may be right, he may not.

But give your source, whom you trust, a break. He may only be doing his job - misleading in the hope that competitors go nuts.

Don't blame the guy. Thing is not even snr. management at times know what happens. There was probably a pilot, substantiated rumours about a rollout which might have been true but never actually initiated etc Decisions like this are usually end up being made at executive level after they have analysed technical aspects, finances, roi etc

I do not think the guy would have deliberately lied to you. With the info he had he was probably 100% certain that the rollout would proceed. Maybe it was just put on hold, we (& him) don't know.

May i gloat and say 'i told you so' ?:)

but on a more serious note, this is a prime example of people believing what they want or believing what other people say, unless there is a written notice from the company stating this, everyone even the employees of the company are just as clueless.

But you where the big man and admitted and apologized, which alot of people wouldn't even do, so kudos to you on that.
